Computer Diagnostic Issue

Hey CF,

Long time no see. So, to jump right into the issue, I'm having an issue:

Recently my computer has been freezing randomly, mostly when browsing the internet, but last night it froze and now refuses to boot up. It boots up to exactly the same point everytime, when at the Windows screen with the bar with the three sliding bars, on their second time, 80% of the way across.

I am fairly certain it must be a hardware issue, as I tried to boot from CDROM using the F12 boot menu to no avail. I see no LED warning within the case during boot up. I've checked all PSU connections, and they are all plugged in. I have NOT checked the PSU, as I do not know how. I am requesting help on finding which part is causing the issue so I can replace it.

I will post my specs as soon as I find them...

Please boot in safe mode by tapping F8 on start up.

Then go to system restore and choose a date prior to the issue

Upon completion, please update all Windows and virus scan your machine. Please back up your important data and then

please contact John on the forum to check for malware.
 
I forgot to mention that I have tried to boot up in safe mode as well, to no avail. It still crashes on the Windows loading screen.

I am fairly certain that it is not a virus.

Ok, I just did that. Same thing occurs, however I couldn't do it without the gfx card because my motherboard as no onboard video.

Did you install any new hardware/ software recently? Do you get any BSOD or error messages?
I don't think it is the PSU, but I'm also not certain it's the motherboard.

I've had a problem before where one of my PCs froze/ crashed when the windows loading screen appeared and it was a problem with the windows installation.

Someone on another forum also had a similar issue: The OS crashes at the loading screen and the DVD drive also stopped working - so using a USB DVD drive the OS was reinstalled but this only worked for a bit, turned out the HDD was failing.

On another forum: A person with a similar problem had replaced his motherboard in hopes of fixing the issue but to no avail. However, he could boot up Windows when the DVD drive was disconnected.

Try using a USB DVD drive or installing another working DVD drive and see if you can do a repair install of Windows or a re installation. Run diagnostic software from the HDD manufacturer to see if your HDD is failing.

Last night I removed the PSU and did the paper clip trick I found on another website. My PSU failed it, as the fan got short, weak bursts of power but nothing else.

How could I detect if it was the motherboard? Today I've tried sticking in a different power supply, but am having some difficulties getting it to start still. Although I do know that power is going into the system because I can see the lights on the keyboard register when the connection is made.

I did not test this PSU before putting it in, and I think that's the next thing I'll do.

Also, in putting my new PSU in, I noticed I did not have any place to plug in the "1394" switch coming from the case. Is this an issue? I'll take pics if people request it.

EDIT:

Found out I did the paper trick wrong. Both PSUs are fine. Looks like you guys were right. How do I go about confirming it's the motherboard now?

No, I couldn't find the exact same copy of my motherboard on newegg, just something really close.

My XP has four registrations left, no worries :)
 
Got my new motherboard from Newegg today. After squambling with the wires for awhile and installing XP, everything ran right.
