Computer doesn't detect dvd drive

I'm trying to install a dvd drive onto a fairly old dell. I've got it all hooked up. Power works, and its plugged into the motherboards SATA port.

the problem is the computer simply doesn't detect it. I go into the device manager and I don't even see any SATA controllers, only IDE. Do I need to update the computers bios or something?

Suggestions

Check your connections. You can also unhook and try rehooking (normally a computer will automatically detect).

Did you plug in the power connector? Does the bios have a setting to enable the Sata ports?
