Hiya

My computer has started to become very, very, sssslllooowwwwww, so much that I've resorted to calling out a PC Engineer.

Just so I know he's not gonna rip me off; what things should he be doing to get me in tip top performance again? AND what software will he be most likely to use to achieve this (so I can do it myself and not be handed with a £50 ($100)) fee!?!?!?!?
 
Few Simple Tools I would Use are As Follows:

AVG Free Edition. This is a Great Virus Scanner, Will Scan for Nastys on your computer And Remove them.

Ad-Aware-2007 Free Edition This will scan for Spyware/Adware, Again these are Things you DO Not Want on your PC.

Cleanup! This is quiet a good program to find and remove things that may slow down your computer.

Hi-Jack-This This is a simple program that will scan your computer, to find any junk you dont need. What it does, will save a logfile.

Paste the logfile on here, We will tell you what you can 'Fix'


Final thing you can do is

Start -> Run -> msconfig

Go too "startup" Tab

Upload Screen shots too somewhere such as Photobucket and post the [ img ] Tags Here

And we will tell you what you can get rid of from your start up, Thus making your computer start faster!

If the programs above do not work or show success, then I would just reinstall Windows, as many times thats what computer repair technicians will do, then they will charge you for the OS.
 
Yeah, I am a computer engineer (sorta) and I will readily admit we are all pretty lazy. If it can't be fixed running a couple of tools, we won't spend all day searching through someone's computer trying to figure it out. We'll backup all your files and reinstall the OS. So, save some money and do what's been suggested. Run a few programs and if it doesn't help: sha-bang, reinstall the OS.

Can you explain what the blurb from hijack this is and how to intereret it?

P.S. That engineer said he'd have to look at the log files?!?!? What are they and where do they hide?

P.P.S Can you tell I'm not entirely sure of this guy, lol
