Computer "Files"- Where did they come from?

For the past year and a half I really haven't had too many problems with my slow 133mghz computer. Last week it really started to slow down ( start up- going from website to website,ect.) One thing I noticed was when I run my Norton Anti virus program- The number of "files" doubled from between 32000-35000 to over 65000 and took over twice as long to run. Any idea what these files are and how come the doubled within a weeks time. Perhaps this has something to do with why my computer has slowed down so much lately.
