Computer for college

depends on how much you have to spend. I would stay away from MACs. More ppl will have windows based notebooks and PCs @ college so you will be able to get more help if you need it. I would recommend an alienware notebook. They even have a model that has 2 hard drives, you would deffinately rock the college with that one. Get a good firewall, no free ones and good anit virus and spyware, again no free ones* like spyware doctor or spy sweeper

*with spyware you can use spybot and adawre in conjuction with spyware doctor or spyware sweeper

I have seen the results of notebooks that have been connected to college networks
also protect where you plug in the power connector on your notebook, unplug when not using. Broken power jacks are about 70% of the notebooks i see for repair. Some you can buy a new jack to solder on, most you would need a new mainboard. Get a good case too, I like the back pack types.

^^ whats wrong with free ones (or at least anti-virus software, for a firewall, idk)

I have both anti virus software, as well as spyware software, all of which is free, and you know what? I dont have any virus' or spyware.

*edit* maybe things are different on a big network though..

Alienware is overpriced and they fall apart, seriously. Toshiba and iBuyPower are the top two, IMO. I would get one primary Anti-Virus, Avast or AVG and some free security softwares. Alienware=Crap

Personally I would get a Macbook Pro. If it is a PC you want never buy HP consumer products, go for their business class. Better made, no crappy bundled consumer software, sturdy, and a lot of times they have better warranties and they are the same price for the most part.

Toshiba make okay laptops but I don't like some of their designs, and of course IBM make some good laptops but again they are also business class. IBM doesn't really make consumer level products anymore.

IMO and IME Dells and Alienwares are not great laptops at all.

What features do you need for your laptop?

...LOL or at least you don't think you have any. Fundamentally there is nothing wrong with the "free" ones. I disenfect computers professionally and it usually takes 3-5 different virus scanners, 2-3 different spyware scanners and maybe 1 maybe 2 trojan removers to remove EVERYTHING, not to mention the threat of root kits now adays. I would at the minimum recommend spyware doctor or spy sweeper. For some unknown reason there is NOT ONE SINGLE PROGRAM that will remove all the known viruses, same for spyware. They all have their own little nitches of what they remove with some overlap.

No free ( outside of established companies ... ie AVG, YAHOO, GOOGLE, spywareguide.com ..etc) programs from the internet. They usually are not what they tout themselves as ... ie search accelerators, tool bars, free music downloaders, cash coupons, recipe toolbars, free virus scans, free hard drive repair, windows tools, programs that sound close to established ones like windows doctor, spyware sweep....etc.

Apparently there is also a lot of malware on some college networks mixed with exploits to turn off your anti virus / firewalls .

as everyone knows by now , do not open email attachments from unknown sources and in folder options in wimdows explorer turn off hide file extension,
here is why....someone can send you an attachment that might be a trojan,
the file name might be " my picture.jpg.scr " with the hide file extension on you will only see "my picture.jpg" you click on it and now someone has tricked you into installing a trojan on your ... or aH, now it is their pc.

Ever head of HijackThis, best one ever invented.... And the SmitFraudFix, bet you never heard of that one.

What ever you do, do not get a HP. They break down quickly. My cousin had one and she had to replace the Hard Drive 4 times and replace the DVD-ROM Drive.

For the record I don't use any anti-spyware or any anti-virus on my windows xp machine. I haven't had a virus in years (over 5 years) because 95% of the time its the user's fault they get a virus. They browse on insecure and malicious sites or use crappy infested P2P software like limewire or something similar.

My computer runs fine and always had with out any virus or spyware problems for years now.

I agree. When I first got my PC I installed virus software. Then the virus software starting being annoying so I deleted it. I was going to reinstall, but it runs fine without it.

Limewire is only a problem when you don't watch what you are doing, I found an adware.gen in it and promptly deleted it. I have never had a problem with my Limewire or anyone else's.
