Computer freezes during online games

I just built a computer (my first build) and installed Call Of Duty and Battlefield 1942 on it. When I tried to play Battlefield, it kept freezing up on me. After a map would load, it'd freeze or after I had been playing for 5 minutes or so. I uninstalled and reinstalled it several more times but to no avail. I thought it must be a problem with Battlefield 1942 since Call of Duty single player worked fine. However, when I got the patch for COD and started playing online, it froze up on me. I then tried BF1942 single player and it worked fine.

Obviously something is wrong with my internet, but when I'm browsing the web or on AIM everything works fine. I'm on a LAN and the other computers on my network can play online games.

Does anybody know what may be causing the problem? My motherboard has a built in firewall I think, but I don't think I installed it. I'm using Avast antivirus and Microsoft antispyware.

Thanks for any help.
