My computer freezes just after it starts up into Windows XP. It has no problem with the Windows loading screen or anything, but after it gets into Windows, the mouse will move really jerkily for about 5-10 seconds and then it just freezes, and the only thing I can do is turn the computer off with the button. No matter how many times I restart, it's always the same.
I booted into safe mode, which worked fine, and tried to do system restore from there, but for whatever reason there weren't any restore points (I had never actually made one, but I was under the impression that they were supposed to be automatically created from time to time). I tried Last Known Good Configuration, and all of the various troubleshooters and came up with nothing.
Then, after backing up my hard drive, I tried my system restore disks. Well, first I tried restoring from the hidden partition, which seemed to work. It wiped my C drive, reinstalled windows, etc. But when the computer rebooted, it got to the Windows setup screen, functioned for about 5-10 seconds, and then froze (although the irritating Windows elevator music kept playing.) It was exactly the same problem as before. I tried to boot into safe mode, but it wouldn't let me because it said the system wasn't finished being installed. So then I tried restoring my system directly from the CDs (I thought maybe the virus or whatever caused this problem might have damaged the system restore on the hidden partition), but it gave me the same results. So basically, I can't use my computer at all now. I can still get into the BIOS, and anything before Windows boots up, but that's about it.
I can't figure out if it's a hardware problem or a software problem...if it were a hardware problem, it seems to me that it wouldn't have worked in safe mode, but before I attempted the system recovery, safe mode worked just fine. So I guess it's a software problem, except that my hard drive was formatted (twice!) and windows was reinstalled, and it still doesn't work.
I have an Acer Aspire 3000 series notebook computer with a 50GB hard drive that's partitioned in half (as far as I know, the other half wasn't wiped). I suspect that the problem came from a virus, because one of the computers in my office came down with the same problem and my flash drive has had contact with both, but I could be wrong. I have 512MB of RAM. I don't know what other information might be relevant, but let me know.
Thanks!
