guess i have the no post issue

its a p4 2.6 c
on a ecs 648fx main board

512 of generic ram
this setup worked before

i sold it to a friend and i am building him a computer with a new case and new DVD/CD burner
with 80 gb hdd
"SAMSUNG SpinPoint P Series SP0802N 80GB 7200 RPM 2M Cache IDE Ultra ATA133 Hard Drive "

is that hard drive compatible with that main board?

so i know that the combo of main board and ram with proc did at one time
(about 3 months ago) function together

when it boots up it says
detecting IDE devices and thats where it stays
it freezes there

you cant get into bios by pressing del

if you press the power button for a split second you get 3 quick beeps

if you press and hold it turns off

I am at a loss

I put a stick of known good ram in and it didnt help

also my CD/DVD burner thats in said computer
I cant get it to open up
its like it lacks power
this is probably all related

any help would be appreciatied
pretend i dont know what im doing

In reference to your problem, first, I would locate your mobo manual and figure out what the 3 beeps stand for. Once you figure that out, that should be able to narrow down the problem a bit. You said you cannot get into the bios gui? Have you tried tapping delete as soon as the computer starts? With your computer hanging on detecting IDE drives, my guess would be faulty IDE ribbon cable(s), faulty IDE controller within the mobo, or a corrupt BIOS. To remedy the situation, try installing only known working hardware such as RAM, HDD, Video card, etc to rule out the possibility of a hardware issue. If you are unable to get into BIOS or flash BIOS, try resetting the mobo using the jumper on the mobo itself. I cannot remember exactly which jumper it is (i think 5) so read up on that. If nothing still works, i think it would be time to invest in a new mobo. Best of luck.
