Computer Freezes randomly

Hello.

Over the last couple of months my computer has been freezing randomly, although it's usually when i'm playing on games or writing an email or something like that.

I have found that opening the side and pointing a desk fan into the case seems to stop it freezing most of the time, but we don't see why. Here is my computer specs now:

My temperatures are as follows (this is without the desk fan pointing in):

Over the last couple of months we've been fitting in new components to try and stop it, first we brought a new CPU fan which brought the CPU temp down by 10degrees but still it froze up. Then we tried replacing the graphics card, but it still froze up. So we brought a 4mm fan for the chip on the board, once again, it still froze up. We then purchased a new stick a ram and tried that on it's own, but it still froze up, so we put the other stick in with that on, and it still froze up. So today a new power supply came 500W this time compared the the 350W we had before, but guess what, it still froze up. Infact the only things we have in that are the same with what we started off with is the motherboard, processor, and the two hard drives.

According to the Gigabyte site our bios is uptodate.

By freezing up we mean, the monitor just stops and shows the same screen without anything moving, the mouse won't move and the hard drive light is often just a solid red light.

I really don't know what to do next. Any ideas?

turn off ur power magnagement check that out

Thanks for letting me know, the only thing that i have in common with you is the hard drive manufactuer seagate. I'll have a look at the bios power management stuff tomorrow.

Have you tried replacing IDE cables? Floppy drive cable (if present) etc. If your Hard Drive light is on solid when frozen then I would say that you have an IDE problem. Cables, HD itself. Try running the system with only one HD for a while. Lots of things to try.

We have tried using a different IDE cable, although that doesn't explain why pointing a case fan into the case often stops it from freezing.
 
i have ten fans running
but it still frezzes
i ran a mem test today schedule from 7:30 to wen i get home from skool
it froze at 8:33
i check the HDD light this time and it wasnt on
 
Chipset drivers updated? My PC froze randomly during drive-to-drive file transfers until I updated. Now I have way fewer problems :) Just a thought.

Well we went ahead and installed it anyways, unfortunatly this hasn't solved the feezing problem as around 10 mins into playing a game it froze up, we kept checking the CPU temperature while playing and it didn't go above 45 degrees. Any more ideas?

You sure the heatsink is solidly placed on the CPU, with thermal paste? I'm wondering if that temperature reading is too low.

Yep, were 100% sure it's on properly, we have taken it off, cleaned it and replaced it with new paste three times.

The side of the case was off when that temperature was read, i expect it to be 5-10 degrees higher with the case side panel on.

We are going to check over the motherboard tomorrow for any bad capactors that we can see.

Can anyone suggest my next method of action? Even if that means replacing something?

Is that idle or load? Im guessing idle. What are your load temperatures? (could be your voltages)

So what types of memory are curreently in the system

That means the source of the problem is temperature

That will isolate you to most likely fauly memory followed by overheating t a bad motherboarder

Your problems are temperature based, while you can use the update (and you might as well), it wont fix your problems

How are you checking? Exiting the game and looking? Alt-tabbing and looking? Thats enough to drop a handful of degrees. Also note that the sensors may be off. Also, it could be your videocard overheating (theres no way to check this short of a thermal probe)

Too much paste?
 
Possible but doubtful ... PC3200 suggests by SPD which then means vDimm is 2.5-2.6 ish which wouldnt be enough to overheat ram unless there was aother serious problem.
