Hey,

I posted this originally in "Computer Games and Consoles", but someone recommended I post it here instead..

I am basically looking to buy a new pc to play intense games on, like doom 3, quake 4, etc... I had posted some specs for an intel system for $642, but it was recommended to go with an AMD system instead. Here are my new spec's so far and I would like to know what you guys think... This one is for $705...

CPU: (939-pin) AMD ATHLON™64 3200+ CPU w/ Hyper Transport Technology

Video: NVIDIA Geforce 6200 Graphics with TurboCache supporting 256MB 16X PCI Express VIDEO CARD

Harddrive: 160GB 7200RPM Hitachi Hard drive

Please let me know what you guys think of this and what areas or parts would you swap out or recommend while still keeping the overall cost relatively low. Thanks in advanced for your help!

im selling my computer 700 $ shipped and it is a lot better than that + comes w/ some games and software. its in the buy/sell thing. But if you want to build one, i do beleive you should get a little more of a system for 700 dollars where are you buying the parts?

Actually.. I custom built it from cyberpowerpc.com. The exact one I started from was at this link.. http://www.cyberpowersystem.com/system/ultra7000.asp?v=d Do you think this site is charging way to much for the buck?

I just figured that if I built my own system, most of the parts would cost seperate shipping and it would end up costing more. Let me know what you think of that site and if you would suggest building my own over this site. Thanks!

Glad I could help ... do realize i just grab newegg cuz it's convenient .. there may be better prices elsewhere :) (i dont buy major parts online.... cheaper for me that way)
 
I was wondering how an AMD Athlon64 3200+ compares to a Pentium 4 3.0Ghz... Is the Athlon64 3200+ about 3.0Ghz or how can you compare them?

For what you're looking for, the AMD system will suit you better. You may want to have a look at CPU 101.
 
Praetor, thanks for the link to the CPU101.. I have a better understanding now about processors. I have one more quick question about the configuration you came up with... Would you recommend upgrading the Athlon64 3200+ to something higher? Or would it make much of a difference? Thanks in advanced!

If you can afford it, get yerself a X2-3800 ($322) but if not the Athlon64-3500 ($200) is what I would have put in if i had a bit bigger budget
 
Yeah the X2-3800 is a bit pricey, but the Athlon64 3500+ is doable... I'm gonna have to buy a few parts at a time for this baby, but I am looking forward to building this. Thanks again for your help!

Glad to help, might also want to consider a better PSU (id consider it before the new CPU), the PSU that comes there is on-paper-ok but i would rpefer the tried-and-true for reliability
 
Hey again,

I never really thought of the PSU being very important.. Especially not more important than a better CPU, but I learn something new everyday... Do you have any recommendations for a decent-good power supply? What should I be looking for? Thanks again!

Hey.. I read your guide on PSU's and I am considering either the Superflower 550W TT-550SS (+3.3V@35A, +5V@50A, +12V@30A) or the AMS Mercury EPS 460W PP-4603EPS (+3.3V@24A, +5V@24A, +12V1@18A, +12V2@15A).

One is 24Pin and the other is 20Pin... I do not know which the motherboard supports or how to find out.. Could you please provide a little assistance on this part of it? Thanks!

Your mobo is 24p but the PSU should come with a 20->24 for the other one :)
 
Hey again,

I'm looking for a simple case to build my pc in. Since I'm going to buy the PSU seperately, I do not need one to come with the case. I have seen lots of people suggesting the Area 51 Case (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811148022), but it doesn't look like it has very good air flow and I think I want something a little better for that. Let me know what you guys think and if you have any suggestions. Thanks!
