Computer has slowed almost to a stop

New Member
Need some help here. My trusty machine has slowed to a crawl lately. I can re-boot and it will run a bit faster then after a few moments it is back into the slow mode. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks..

Get rid of Norton. Norton is the devil. Get Avira or Kaspersky or something less . . . stupid. For yourself and the preservation of your pride. I use Avira, NOD32, and Spy Sweeper. You should probably get rid Boonty Games, CD Guard, def viewpoint at startup with msconfig. Hope that helps.

Yeah definatly get rid of Norton...its total crap and that alone will slow down your system.

Use Avast or AVG instead as its much better and free.

Hopefully Buzz or someone with more knowledge on Hijackthis logs will come along to look at you log soon :)
 
This has nothing to do with Norton. Your system specs are more than capable of running SystemWorks without performance issues. The problem is the various malicious active X (016 entries) present in your log which are "phoning home".


Before proceeding.....

Re-configure Windows Explorer to Show Hidden Files & Folders.
Ensure you're familiar with restarting in Safe Mode.


Then upload a file for analysis please.

Go to Jotti's Malware Scan.

Paste the filepath below into the box at the top and hit Submit to upload it for analysis:

Save the results to notepad and post them in your next reply please.

  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the "Update" icon then select the "Update now" link.
  • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once updated, select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports", select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware for use later.


Step # 2

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.


Step # 3

Reboot into SAFE MODE now please.

Scan with HijackThis and place a checkmark in the boxes before the following entries:-

Close all other windows except HijackThis and click the "Fix Checked" button.


Step # 4

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware and select the "Scanner" icon at the top.
  • Then select the "Scan" tab and click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient as it may take a while to complete.
  • A prompt will appear if any infections are found: please select "Apply all actions".
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left of the screen and save it to your desktop as text file.
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.


Step # 5

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • AVG Report-Scan.txt.
  • Jotti's results on the submitted file.
  • New HijackThis log.
 
I would like to thank all that helped me rid my machine of a lot of problems. I have learned the hard way to look at some of the obvious things that could cause a problem as I had. During this ordeal, My IE kept closing by itself and after a coulpe of times I mistakedly sent an error to Microsoft and looks at the possible problems they sent back in the dialog box and noticed a message that if you had a Yahoo toolbar, to check for fixes from Yahoo. Well I just deleted it and all of a sudden the internet was back and much faster. I continued to clean my system as all of you were kind enough to suggest and now the machine runs like it used to. Again-Thank you very much!
