computer ID???

i have a few questions about my laptop, but im new to the whole computer thing so please excuse my noob questions.

first off, im on this site because i was apart of another forum that i was using since early 2006. i was then perma banned because i introduced my little brother to this site and he started logging in with my account and was getting into all sorts of trouble. this, in the end fell on me. i tired to explain this to the mod, but they did not want to hear it.

i guess my question is what can i do to get around this perma banned? i tried using a proxy, but their site does not allow it. i also tried changing my ip but this did not work either. this got me thinking, does my computer have a perm id burned into it?

Changed your IP? If you're connected thru a router, your IP appears the same to everyone else, you've probably changed your IP in LAN which means that you IP only appears different to other computers in your network... your router gets assigned another IP which is the one that everyone out there in the net can see. I think it's assigned by the ISP and you can't change it unless you move elsewhere or try conncting thru other routers... that is if the case is what I suspect it to be.

Well anyway no, your computer does NOT have any kinda perm. ID burned into it.

HWID depends on your hardware, as soon as HW changes so does the HWID. So it's not really "burned into it"... plus, I don't think web servers would have access to HWIDs of computers connected to it. That would make it too easy to stalk people on the net...

It's your external IP that is banned. Changing your NIC's IP won't do a thing, as it's all local, you would need to find a way to change your external IP.

Out of interest and a bit vague on this, as I understand it my ISP assigns me a different external IP address every time I connect my modem. How can this be banned

A subnet ban where you can block out whole ISP's, I remember in an old clan they banned the entire subnet for BT because of a dynamic IP address system BT have.

Wow, that's a bit like cracking a walnut with a sledgehammer :D

on the net its the wan.
Good question about the mac addy or physical address.
I would also like to know. it just seems to be specific i
think to each computer. Somebody on this planet will build
on it. im just kind of thinkin its tied to the lan side.

That leads to another question though. The comment
i made above. Isn't the mac and physical address the same?
Ive answered with the above statement on several post here.
at least two. they commented its not the same.

thanks

It is not on the LAN side, it can not be unless you have the forum hosted on your LAN. All the IP's that are on your LAN are hidden from websites because of NAT.

And yes, MAC and physical address are generally one of the same.

MACs aren't necessarily unique, plus in most cases it's possible to change the MAC address (I think this was called "MAC spoofing" or something...off wikipedia)

MAC's are suppose to be unique, but as you said thats not always the case, there was one situation actually where at a local LAN party two people had the same motherboard with the same MAC address, which was why they were having issues staying on the network.

And while you can't physically change your MAC address on NIC's (they are burned in), you can change what the computer sees them as, which is what MAC spoofing is.
