Hi. I've been having the same computer for a very long time and I just barely am able to play SC2. My plan is to use about 2000Skr(=299USD) to upgrade my computer so my question to you is, which of the following components should be replaced for the best performance:

Grafics - Geforce GTS 250.
Processor - AMD Athlon(tm) 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ 2.00 GHz.
Ram - 1gb Corsair.

System
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002
Service pack 3
 
I would say get another stick of ram at least, perhaps make it 4 gig with a two 2 gig sticks. your GPU is good. i think if you increase ram your computer will be faster and play SC2, with 1 gig you can;t really do much, especially with XP...
 
^ he has a 32 bit OS...4 gigs will be useless.

I'd say grab a 2 gig stick of RAM and maybe a better GPU.

Upgrading to Windows 7 wouldn't hurt either...that'd even give you the opportunity to swap to 64 bit, allowing more than 3 gigs of RAM.

or just save more for a new computer, the AM2 chip (unless that one is 939, in which case don't do anything) is not really upgrade friendly anymore unless you can find a used 4800+ or something comparable.

that GPU is ok, i know people playing the new final fan on gts cards happily, some others insist they need the gtx480 which is just insanity

Well, As I see it this windows 7 isnt a bad idea. I'll buy 4 gig ram and change to 64 bits. But which windows 7 should I use? There's a pricerange from bout 700-2700 skr(=40-350USD) which one do you suggest?
 
The home premium, should do it, or get the professional, but really there is not much difference. i have the professional but that because the students get them very cheaply in UK and US, don;t know about other countries.
 
Home premium will do just fine unless you want the extra playtoys in Pro. If you get the OEM version of them, they're much cheaper.

Technically, getting the OEM version means it's locked to your motherboard, so you can't upgrade that without buying Windows again. However, you can often simply do it over the phone.

Always home premium, you only need professional/ultimate if you really need to work in 35 different languages, or have more than 16GB of RAM, or are building a dual-processor machine or something.

If you can't find a good resale on OEM licenses, just go for home premimum.
Pro or Ultimate if you can find a good price. They have some nice stuff that I once said I wouldn't really need but now use everyday (like bit-locker)
