Computer is burning down...

So i recently went through a problem where my computer would overheat on certain games, And it almost burned down my computer. I had problems re-installing my OS. (kept getting missing files on install) but eventually got it working and now i'm having the same problem.

When playing LOTRO Conquest, LOTRO online etc. My computer almost instantly goes from 80c - 100c. The same issue happens when i turn on my PC, Just turning my PC makes it go from 40c-80c. I think it has something to do with my 4850 but i have no clue why it only happens on certain games. It's also very obvious, As soon as i tab out of said game, my heat will start dropping to normal fast. Anyone have a clue whats up?

Wow sounds like a problem. What is your computer setup? CPU temp? Does the fan kick on the 4850? When playing games with my old ass 6600 I only reach mid to high 60C.

What program are you using to see your temps?

My computer is basically a Compaq Presario SR53104 with a ASUS Radeon 4850HD and 2gigs, With a Dual-core E2140 1.6ghz CPU. Nothing really special.

The fans on 4850s are pretty bad, So i have to turn my fan settings up on my CCC to about 80% and I watch the temps there (On overdrive) which is how im getting my temps.

Did you add the Radeon card recently? You need to make sure the fan on the Radeon card is working. If it is then you need to increase cooling in the case. i.e. a fan pulling air in and a fan pushing air out.

ya the 4850 was recently added, And the fan is spinning. I've thought about the cooling but i'm not sure if it would help, My case is open and it literally takes about 15min of playing certain games to hit burning temps (90c+)

I can play hours and never get that hot. So you have a bigger problem then what you think. Try downloading everst home edition and see what temps you get. Just cross check to make sure you have acurate temp readings.

The 4850 cards are known to run hot.
Try upping the fan speed through catalyst control center.
Do you have good air flow in your case?

I think the problem is the Case.

Is your PC in a small closed off area? Is it out in the open....have you tried taking the side panel off and having a light fan blow inside the case?

at 80% speed the card shouldn't get that hot period unless your room is 100 degrees. The issue could very well be you have poor circulation in your case so its cycling hot air over and over raising the temps.

The fan speed is almost at max (80%) there no real fans in the case, But the case is open. I'm pretty sure the temp readings are right also since i can tell when it starts to overheat on those games (It freaks out, Fan starts sounding different after 90c)

Also this happens even when my room is freezing, PC IS fairly closed off (On my desk) with the side open, Have'nt tried a fan in there. But like i said its only certain games that make it almost instantly go from 80c-100c~ in no time.

He didnt say his video card was hitting the high temps. He said his computer in general was. I would say either video card or cpu. My guesses would be these...

1. video card heatsink not contacting gpu core or lack of thermal paste in between the two.
2. processor and processor heatsink not touching or lack of thermal paste between them.
3. gpu or cpu fan not working
4. not enough fans pulling air in or pushing air out of the case.

Try touching different parts inside the computer and see if you can feel which ones are giving off way too much heat. All the stuff should feel atleast hotter then your hand but feel for parts that are giving off way more then anything else. A processor will heat up from cool to unbearably hot in about 10 seconds when its heatsink, fan, thermal paste arent working right.

Hmmm, i'm gonna try and stick my fan on the side of my case for one run see if it stops the heat, I'll also try and get some paste this week. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Ok, i tried sticking the fan next to my PC and playing and it does'nt reach burning (Never went over 80c) but it does still increase about 5-10c when i enter LOTRO, and drops about 10c when i turn it off.

the problem sounds like the case to me. You said it has "no real fans". The new gpus put off a lot of heat and without an exhaust and intake fan the air is just circulating rather than cooling, even with the case open. Puting a fan beside the case seems to work alright for you though.

Ya, having the fan there seems to cool it down enough to not burn down while playing. While playing the games that would overheat me, I can now STAY near 80c after awhile rather then keep spiking.

I guess some games just run hotter then others tho, since most wont cause any heat difference.
