Computer is lagging/stuttering

Hello all,

I am not sure if this is the right place to make this post. I am a Starcraft 2 player and I just formatted. What happens is, sometimes my fps just goes to crap/ the entire computer lags up, and runs super slow.

I know if I open anything flash related + sc2, my computer goes super choppy/slow.

I know the computer specs are good, I have 8GB ram, an i7 3770k and a GTX 460 video card. I'm unsure how to fix this :( If someone could help me out. All drivers are up to date /windows is completely updated (win7).

What's your Power Supply and what kind of temps are you getting on your CPU and video card?

And yeah you should be clean of viruses, not sure why I asked. It's late and I'm not operating at full capacity. :)

It's a 650W ATX psu.

My gpu and cpu are both getting around 30-40Celcius.
 
Have you tried any other games to see if their doing it as well? You mentioned something about flash. And did this just now start after the clean reinstall?

Well what happened was. Everything was going perfect and one night my computer restarted overnight (windows update) and these issues started up. I spent a few days trying to fix it, but couldn't find a solution.

So I decided to clean format, but the issue persisted. I don't really have any other games. I guess I could try installing one and checking. I'll go ahead and do that, will repost in a minute.

So what happens is, if I run the game + flash player (youtube/grooveshark/Stream) I get all sorts of lag/fps drops. It feels as if the entire computer doesn't have enough ram/processing power to do any tasks. The game itself gets super fps drops, to about 10-20, and the computer is very slow in terms of processing things even alt tabbing/opening new programs/tabs etc.

I often see people on forums asking for dxDiags, I'm not sure if that would be useful in this situation.

Well you mentioned the important aspects of your machine for the most part. Others here are better at this than me but I seem to be the only one up this late right now. Have you made any hardware changes recently? Go ahead and post up a DxDiag if you want.

You can cut out from System Devices down if you want.

Everything looks okay to me. Your video card isn't exactly new but is still plenty powerful for what you're doing. Not sure what to tell you...

Let me know what your PSU model/manufacturer is and try some other games to see how they act. The fact that basic programs are acting weird makes me think it's not localized to SC.
 
I'm trying it with counter-strike :go as we speak.

Very high fps, not really any issues at all tbh.

It's just with Starcraft 2.

Edit: I'd like to think csgo is more demanding than sc2. I do play both games with lowest settings as well, in attempt to maximize performance.

The PSU is an 650W ATX power supply, it's by ULTRA. Model No : ULT-LSP650P

Oh okay. So you were running stuff like youtube at the same time as Starcraft? If that's the case and they're fine on their own then it's certainly Starcraft. Have they had any patches recently for the game? That may have caused an issue or a driver compatability issue. Try reinstalling the game?

There haven't been any patches that I'm aware of. Yes they both run perfectly fun independent of one another, I have tried re installing twice so far. :( I appreciate you trying to help though.
 
Yeah I don't know what to tell you other then it's almost 99 percent positive that it's Starcraft. Maybe try doing some research and see if it has any conflicts with your hardware (namely the video card). Was it doing this before the reinstall of Windows?

Everyone was going great until it did the random restart the one night.
 
So I changed the compatibility for which SC2 opens in, and suddenly it works.. That's very strange. Thank you for your help.

Welcome to CF :)

Make sure you have:

  1. Latest motherboard bios and chipset drivers(from Gigabyte)
  2. Go to intel and make sure you have the latest drivers.
  3. Latest DirectX and Physx (in the driver below). Physx issues can case lag here.
  4. Latest graphics drivers
  5. Ensure there are no yellow or red flags in device manager (if you do, fix them with the motherboard CD and then update at Gigabyte)

You shouldn't have to run it in compatiability mode.

Please un-do the compatiability mode, do all of the above restarting in between. Then defrag your gaming harddrive.

If the problems still exist, please test RAM.

If you need further hardware information i recommend downloading PC Wizard from my sig, install and run it, then go to FILE, SAVE AS and click OK. Copy the text out of that file into this thread.
