Computer is slow while using my dvd or cd drive

Hi all,i have this problem, where my computer becomes slower when i copy from my dvd rom or cd rom or use them for burning purposes, and my main problem,is that while copying or burning, the movie playback is slow, but the sound is fine, and also,i think that the dvd drive's speed in copying or burning is too slow, but maybe that depends on the media im using...

my computer specification are:
pentium 4
3.00 ghz
1 gig ram
plextor dvdr px-712a
plextor cdr px-w5224a

everythig from drivers to windows xp updates are up 2 date...

so plzzzz, can anyone help me solve this problem?

That is mainly due to the large volume of data being copied or burned to disk. Dvds are far slower then cd-rs to write to or copy from due to the larger capacity and compression of data seen there. Burning data dvds does seem to go faster then burning video to them.

Are you doing something else such as surfing online and such while burning the video files to dvd? Whenever you burn a dvd, you should always try not to do anything else and just let it finish burning first. This could of been a reason to the playback. Additionally, what software are you using and what file type was your movie files?

Generally browsing online won't make too much of a difference there. But processing video files places a large demand on cpu time. Background apps and service not related directly to the one included in Windows can also be prevented from auto loading along with Windows when the system starts by reducing them in the msconfig utility. On a good number of drives the burn time for dvds runs about 20min. depending on the size of the files.

"such as surfing online and such"... so basically, doing anything while burning isn't recommend. I didn't just say browsing online.

What you will see often when burning I've noticed is that IE and going from one site to another will see a slow down. At times I'll be burning a backup disk and see it take longer to open the home page. But the burn itself keeps pn going at the same rate.

At present there's a video capture in progress and no slowdown or glitches to report. But cpu demand is obvious when having other things running. I keep only the basics checked in the msconfig startup group.

well,this problem didnt hapen b4,its just i recently formated,thats sth i forgot to say,sorry..

i would copy data normally from my dvd rom,and watch a movie, and no hickups what so ever would occur, and it would take me 15 minutes maximum to copy a data dvd to my computer, now not only does it take me 30 mnts, but i cant watch movies, lsn to music, and surfin or chating is slower...

i dont think that this is normal in any standards, and since this didnt hapen to me before, than sth must b wrong

Well, are you saying
lsn to music, and surfin or chating is slower
as seperate to while you are burning? or while you are burning?

If you said you just formatted, it's most likely just a couple driver issues that you might of not setup yet. Some could be your video card for it being slow overall, codec packs, firmwares for your pc including your dvd writer.

any extra ativity on my computer while burning or copying is really slow,ANYTHING,specially if im playing a video of any kind,i tried to update everything on my computer, and i dont think any driver, firmware or even any windows update slipt my mind, its just driving me crazy coz it wasnt like that b4 formating,my only fear that i have to downgrade sth on my pc..

That's why.. while burning you should'nt really do anything. If this wasn't happening before, it's probably just driver and firmware upgrade to your pc since you formatted, a lot of most of them must be windows drivers only.

It could be due to how XP reallocated system resources after the reinstallation there. XP's resource sharing could be the problem. When everything was reinstalled something may be loading now that wasn't loading before. Or you may have had a bad reinstall of the burning software itself.

but i did update everything, and i mean everything,i dont know what could b left to update....

but really thank u all for ur time,i dont think there is anything more we can do,coz i will have to try and c which driver or update i have to be dealing with to solve this

sorry PC eye,i posted my last reply b4 reading ur last reply,my mistake...

so r u sugesting i format again?

No! That's not going to find where the problem is. You have to look over the things you have installed now and compare those to the things you were running previously. I run a monitor input here and even be at CF and still am able to burn dvds without any real tie ups. You most likely have some program or utility running now that was sitting idle before. That could causing the slowdown you are seeing. Use the msconfig utility to reduce anything there you don't need running in the startup group. See if you notice any improvement afterwards. That's one thing you can try at this time.

ok,forgive my lack of knowledge, but when u say start up group, are u talking bout the group thats under start->all programs->startup?coz there are only 3 items there, and when i run msconfig,i find them under the startup tab,and they are the only entries im familiar with, the rest of the items i find under that tab is geberish to me,and i prefer not to play with them, coz im afraid i might do sth wrong,so should i just try with those 3 items?sory for late reply btw

The items seen in the startup group are those you see when using the msconfig. Those there are installed programs and softwares for video, sound, and other things that load along with Windows. You can disable everything there and Windows will still run. If a feature for video or sound like EAX or a programmable mouse or keyboard feature doesn't work you simply recheck that item and restart the system to see it run again.

The idea here is to locate the problem which may or may not be due to something you installed. You can try disabling one item at a time to see if you come across the problem without having everything stopped at once. That's what the msconfig utility is for mainly troubleshooting problems.
