Computer Issues

Alright,

My friend has a computer that unexpectedly died on him (it wouldn't turn on or anything), so I went around and changed the PSU.

It starts up no problem but it doesn't do anything... it won't boot, none of the CD or DVD drives will open and the monitor doesn't get a signal, even though it's plugged into the graphics card.

It's obvious that his old PSU had died, could it of taken out some of the other stuff when it did?

Thanks!

I'm havign a similar problem with a computer in which i just changed the psu. I'm going to try changing the psu back to see if that was the cause.

Well, his old PSU didn't even allow the computer to be turned on, so I swapped it for one I know works, and it started up... Only, you don't have to press the button on the front, when you flick the switch on the PSU, it comes on...

If it's turning on when you flick the power switch on the back of the PSU, it sounds like a short in the motherboard. I can't think of any other reason why it would power on like that. Except if the connection to the board is wrong, but since you seem to know what you are doing, I doubt that is the problem.

Yep that happend to my first build, when psu flicked on at the bakc everything would turn on and would make a slight high noise, new mothebroard fixed it nicely, maybe his PSU blew, and it took the mobo with it

Yeah, I know his PSU went because it wouldn't do anything when it was in, when we put the new one in, it would power up, you don't get a chance to use the button on the front, as soon as you flick the switch, it comes on...

But nothing seems to be happening, you can't hear any boot up noises... The HDD light is flashing, and the monitor isn't getting a signal...

Thanks! So you guys rekon his MOBO is dead?

sounds like his psu took the mobo with it too mate:cool:

i dont realy know:cool:

have you taken the mobo out of the case?

no i meant just incase its shorting against the case or something

Oh right, well, it isn't a new build, so it hasn't moved, basically, he turned it off, went away, when he came back it was turning itself on and off, in a loop, it would start to power up then stop...

It was late, so he turned it off at the wall and then came to turn it on the next day and it wouldn't start, now we have the problem...

RMA the board and psu

It isn't new, so we can't send it back, he'd have to get a new one...

At least the board. The symptoms you're describing suggests a mobo problem. No monitor activity? The GPU is good, right? That stinks.

Nope, nothing on the monitor... The GPU was fine before this problem, I'm guessing it is now because the fan starts up on it...

Its almost deffinatly they mobo as the exact thing happened to me

Really? The exact same thing?

Do you have a "spare" mobo? Same socket type and all? That would be a decent way to trouble shoot.
