Computer keeps cutting off

My husband has a HP Pavillion ZV5000. He got it in 2004 and it's still works great but he doesn't run it on battery very much anymore because the battery life is really bad. Today it's been cutting off suddenly. We've checked the cord, the transformer, we've sprayed air to clean out the fans and vents but it's still doing it. I know it's an old model, but it's always done great. It's fast, the case is still holding together, still the original screen, etc. Can anyone help?

It turns itself off. The screen goes black. It's as if someone just pushed the off button. When he turns it back on, he doesn't get an error message or something that says the computer shut down prematurely. He's uses autosave and so his work is there when he turns it back on.

Sorry about the "cutting off." I live in the south and that is the catch all phrase for turning off.
