Computer keeps restarting when I try to shut down

I have Windows XP and recently came across a problem where my computer won't shut down. I don't know if this is related to SP3 or even my new CPU, but when I go to "Turn off," it'll do a restart instead. I've even tried hibernating to reduce the heat and strain on my system, and it successfully hibernated a couple of times, but now that make it restart too.

This has really got me scratching my head. Anyone else experience this? Any tips or suggestions are most welcome.

Turns out, it was a trojan/virus called Virtumonde. Actually had a few.

Symantec would detect it, remove it, but it kept coming back.

BitDefender detected some, but couldn't remove one or two.

Avast! found them, gave me options on how to deal with it (it kept recommending to move it to the "chest"...probably because it wouldn't be able to safely delete it), and after I was done scanning, the problems went away.

Glad you got it fixed! You should check out AVG as an alternative Anti-Virus if you ever need a new one.
