Computer keeps shutting down

Umm my computer keeps shutting down. Yesterday it shutdown due to overheating. I opened it up and cleaned out all the fans which had a lot of dust that was blocking the cooling process. But now for some reason when I turn on the computer after a little while at random times it turns off by itself. I'm not sure what the problem is I've cleaned out the fans, I checked and both seem to be working fine. My computer overheated in the past once and shut down but after I cleaned out the fans and let it cool down for a couple of hours it worked fine. Any guess what the problem might be?

I apologize if I've posted in the wrong directory, I wasn't sure where this will fit.

did anything to your computer before it started crashing?
change the hardware, installed something?

You didn't try to overclock your cpu did you? Because that could cause it. When it shuts off are you playing a certain game or just surfing? I would just go buy a better fan and see if that helps.

When and where does it shut off at? Under load or at idle?

You must like wasting money.

Take a household fan and open the case up. Turn it on high and use your computer. Observe and post what happens.

Umm nope, I didn't install any software/hardware or anything. It shuts off at random times, but very soon. Sometimes it shuts off before windows even starts at other times it shuts off after desktop loads and everything. Well it kept shutting down so I tried switching the button under the power switch from 115 to 230, if that's what you mean by overclocking but the same thing happened, so I switched it back.

No, that's not overclocking. LEAVE IT AT 115 IF YOU LIVE IN THE US!

Did you check that all fans are spinning, and that the heatsink is making full contact with the CPU?

Umm, yea I figured that out lol. All the fans are spinning by the way. I tried opening the case and putting some fans on high near it, it worked fine. I've closed the case and turned off the fans and it's still going. So either it's the longest it's stayed on or maybe one of the cards was loose because one seemed out of place and i pushed it in a bit. It's working fine for now, if it happens again I'll post again in this thread. Thanks for the help.

It might've been shorting or so. I'd download PC Wizard 2008 and check your CORE/CPU temperatures to just be sure though.

I moved it back to the it's original place and the same things happening again. Maybe it's close to the wall and the fans having problems sucking in/pushing out air. I'll do the core cpu temperature check.

omg now it says NTLDR is missing. I read it's somehow connected to windows booting. Tell me I did not just mess up completely.

Sorry again, umm I looked into the NTLDR thing and apparently it was just the hard disk wire that needed tightening. I ran that program you said and here's the temperatures it gave me.
Processor 96 degrees
Maiboard 36 degrees
Power/Aux 36 degrees
Hard disk 29 degrees
all are in Celsius

hey

i have come across a problem like this before my self. theproblem was i had a virus in the boot file and every so often it would shut down it got to the stage it would boot and shut down instantly never ending cycle. maybe scan with a AV...

if it doesn't work then i could maybe take a look into it and give you another possibly solution.

Umm I tried that, it seems the problem is the temperature because the Processor is reaching temperatures of 96C

those cpu temps are waaaay to high.
double check if there is any dust in your fan and in the cooling block below it.

you could try to reapply thermal paste if the above doesnt work.

96C? Damn! Isn't the CPU supposed to auto-shutdown at like 80C or so?

Don't start your computer until you solve that overheating problem

Surprised your CPU hasn't melted through your motherboard running at that temp lol. Yes normally it's around 70 - 80C for the auto shutdown. I would most definitely reseat (remove and replace) the CPU, before putting the CPU cooler back on, take that apart and blow every little spec of dust from within the fans and cooling frame, re-paste it and replace it. It might be worth buying a new heatsync however get one or two other temperature monitoring programs and see if they read around the same temps as not every temp program is accurate.

What CPU are you using by the way? If it's any of the Core 2 - series then use TAT for temp reading too. But I am amazingly surprised that the temps are that high for your CPU.

Rove.

Yea I was pretty sure that 96C was way too high. I think I've got the problem, because the heat sink is sparkling clean after I took it all apart, and theres not a spec of dust but I noticed the thermal paste below the heat sink came off, so I'm guessing the heat sink isn't making full contact with the processor? Btw. I'm using an Intel Celeron something it's not a dual core.

there's your problem. give it a run to some local computer store and get some thermal paste (arctic silver is preferable)
take of the hsf, reapply the thermal paste and reseat the hsf.
after that you'll probably be fine, be sure to check the temps to see if you've done it correctly.

Indeed, most definitely go get some thermal paste as soon as possible and I wouldn't advise you using the computer again until you do as running at those temps surely can't be healthy for it. Just remember not to put too much or too little on when you do re-apply it as you may have the same problem with it.

cpu temps are too high. even if ambient temps are high.

when you cleaned your pc how did you do it? ideally you should power off, yank out the cord, and use COMPRESSED AIR. focus at the fan and specifically the heatsink.

your other temps are ok.
