Hi,
Can anyone please help me.My computer keeps switching off every 15 - 20 mins randomly. It started about a week back.It only switches on if i unplug the power cable for 2 mins and plug it back again.I ve checked the power options in control panel and everything is fine there. It runs on win xp and the processor is amd athlon 2000+ with 512 mb ram.Ive tried system restore but it doesnt solve the problem.
I will be really grateful if some one can advise me on what to do.
cheers,

The PSU is most likely the culprit, or even the power cable.
It is the square box at the back of your PC case where you plug the end of the cable into. If you open up your case, you'll see it.

If you have any other cable, like if your monitor uses one too, try switching the cable.. if you have another psu, you can try switching it too.

It can also be something else like viruses and such.. but from the details you explained, it seems like it'll most likely be those two hardware. If you have extra parts, then try switching them. If not, I'd probably suggest you to do some kind of virus and spyware scan first just to make sure so if you dont have any extra parts and plan to go buy them, you wont waste money.

I have had the exact same problem, i had to replace the CPU cooler. The CPU was getting way to hot. It just started out of of nowere.

Hi guys,
Thanks a lot for the advice.I ran a virus scan and found nothing as the sys is upto date with all the protection.I have spybot , adware, windows defender and avg anti virus and i never download any dodgy stuff (atleast not on this sys).As some of you said it could be hardware related.Ill swap the cables for monitor and cpu and also open the case so that it has enough cooling as i suspected this might be the problem( it is very hot in here in sheff).
Thanks a lot for the advice and ill let you know how i get on with it.
cheers,
