Computer keeps turning off!!!

Hi, i bought a brand new computer today and I was in the process of installing Windows when my computer shut down. Now every time I turn it on it turns off after a short period. Why is this?
 
That sounds liek a powersupply problem. Im no expert but post the details of your pc and powersupply.
 
i agree with b-man on this one, ive seen it happen so many times with cheap power supplies. you need to make sure that the power supply is a good brand and that its powerful enough to run your system
 
First post the amperage of your power supply, there should be a sticker on the side of it when you open up the PC. There should be voltage 12V, 5V 3.3V.... The most important one is 12V look under 12V and post the Amp (A) value.

Also, if it is your PSU, the reason it is doing this is because when installing Windows XP, a lot of disk operations are being performed and that requires a lot of power. A weak PSU can be overloaded and shutdown.

This could also be a heat problem, go into your BIOS and look if there is a temperature monitoring section. Post what temps you see.

Lastly just post your system specs so we can actually see what you have.
 
if its on the start up (not while using it just starting it up) it could be that the bios got screwed up some how. that could cause it to boot then just shut off if the settings dont work.
 
I've had machines come in with the same problem that ended up being a faulty power switch, it would get stuck and loop on and off...sadly, it happens more than it should

I'd try switching the reboot button with the power button and try to boot using the reset switch
Did you buy it online or at a local shop??
Take it back to the shop if that's the case
 
ive had something similar I bought my comp...bout 2 years ago and when I booted it..something said error and counted down like 30 seconds and restarted..

its a virus you should talk to microsoft about it...
 
Theres the bug inflicted in copys of windows xp which dont have sp2. What happens is an error and counts down to 30 seconds and restarts. Best thing is to set up a firewall blocking the virus then go online and download sp2 or get a copy of sp2, get a friend to make a copy for you.
 
I just had a 4 year old Duron 800's 300w PSU do that, but it had a burning smell to go with it, already replaced it with a 400w and it now stays on. Left it on overnite for testing purposes.

This would accomplish nothing since all the power and reset buttons are, are a switch that when pressed will complete the connection for a power on/off or reset signal. There is nothing computer related with the power button turning it on.
