Computer locks up

Can anyone please help me. My daughter has an emachine T3414 with 256mb and 80gb hard drive and XP. She has only added yahoo messenger onto the computer and I added system mechanic 6 to it and use Norton antivirus to try and keep things running smoothly. Lately we cannot get it to boot up, shut down, or use IE or any other program without it hanging up. Sometimes it will lock up for an hour or more. Often control/alt/delete won't even work and the only thing I can do is shut off the power. It will lock up even if I go to start and move the mouse to click on one item there- an item from the start menu will highlight when the mouse runs over it and that item will open (eventually) even though I didn't stop the mouse on it or click on it. The computer is only a year old and has had the board replaced (under warranty) once. I am not a computer whiz but there must be something I can do to fix this. She and I are both frustrated with it but cannot afford to take it in to have it checked let alone buy a new one. Does anyone have any suggestions? We would so greatly appreciate your help. Thank you so much in advance.

wow a celeron d @ 3ghz with only 256mb of ram. I think its locking up because of lack of ram you got. You got system mechanic and norton antivirus and they just hog all the memory. All i can suggest is get more ram,

cheapest ram i found for you only 35$.

or uninstall your system mechanic and norton antivirus. They just hog all your system resources. Stop looking at porn so you won't get any viruses and system problems :D

Also try running CCleaner and or spybot and adaware you have probably got some of that going as well. But before you run those make sure you shut down system mechanic and norton as both are resource hogs and you dont have much memory to spare.

That is weird, even if a lack of ram it shouldn't lock up like that. I guess maybe norton is hogging all the resources.

I agree with both of you. Your memory is too low for running much application. upgrade your ram to 512mb, if can 1gb to make it perform. just add some $ and you can running your computer smoothly.

Thanks so much for your help and for getting back to me so quickly. I wondered if it might be lack of memory but the system ran just fine for a long time and just started getting bad the past few weeks. I did spyware check and antivirus scan and all came up clean. I'll be looking to buy more memory as soon as I can! Thanks so much again, all!

i dont think memory is your problem, it sounds like therer are some corrupt windows files, i think you need to do a windows repair or use the restore cd's that came w/ your machine and start fresh...
