Computer not recognize external HD (Swingline)

I have a 160gb Swingline external HD that connects to the laptop with USB (2x). Sometimes my laptop just don't recognize the drive is there. If I unplug it and plug it back in, a few times, it would resolve the problem. Even in Disk Management, the same thing happened.

Any clue and how to fix that?

2nd part of the question . . .

How do I remove all partition so I can use the entire capacity? Currently, about 8.9 gb is allocated to a partition which I can't use.

Use disk management to delete those partitions. Your drive or case may be failing.

Right click the My Computer icon | manage | Storage | Disk management.

The drive might be fine, it could be the controller chip or whatever it's called that powers the USB. You can remove the drive and place it in another external enclosure.
