Computer not starting

Alright, last night in the middle of some work on a presentation, a messenger conversation, and multiple downloads my computer spontaneously restarted and would not get past "verifying DMI pool data." I'm pretty sure that its my hard drives (in a RAID0 config... and yes I knew the risks before I set that up, not too much important data on there but I wouldn't mind having it back), but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of what to do or any other possible causes. Oh yeah, and the RAID setup says that both disks are "normal." Thanks.

I would assume the exact same thing. I don't think its recognizing any of the HDDs. When I went through the window install sequence (just to see what it would do) it just saw my 1 GB flash drive which i forgot was still connected.

Sorry i forgot "verifying DMI pool data" occurs much later in the startup sequence (ive not slept yet :P) ... do you have a spare HDD? Since you can get to the Windows installation i dont think your memory is the problem

do you have a spare HDD?
Yeah, I have an old PATA drive sitting around that I think I try when I'll get home.

Memory was my second guess since I have some crappy memory in there, but I'm pretty sure its the drives

You can always run a MemTest on the memory just to rule it out but id consider installing a quick copy of XP to the system and trying to recover the RAID afterwards :)

Sounds good. Thanks Praetor. Wait... where was Cromewell to help me out on this? And to think I voted for him :P

heh I was still sleeping, unlike Praetor I do that every now and then
Except during March break (or do you sleep now? ;) ... getting old and all....)

Back on topic, if i recall correctly you got your drives working again .... as for future RAIDing, unless you really need the sequential read/write performance you should probably consider de-RAIDing your machine as the gains are negligible

Yeah, they were working up till my more recent problems

We'll see... I like having a single logical drive... not so concerned about performance :P
