Hi!

I am looking for the best parts for a computer.
What is the difference between motherboard and chipset?
Are they same?

The chipset is a part of the motherbaord that has/controlos certain function.
Ex. the x38 chip has crossfire where as the 790i chipset has three way SLI.
what all do you plan on using the computer for?
People here can help you pick out the right stuff.

I am just finding best parts for a powerful computer.
I am planning to buy GeForce 9800 GX2, I have a motherboard with PCI-E x16 slot. Is that good enough?

I am not very smart at computers construction so I turned to this forum.
Does the following list contain all parts computer has, if not (which Im sure of) please tell me what am I missing.

Processor
Motherboard
Memory
Hard Drive
Optical Drive
Video Card
Sound Card
Power Supply
Media Reader

Most new motherboards has built-in audio.

If your going to buy a 9800, make sure the rest of your system can keep up with it! :P

Why don't you have a look at computer stores/online stores and see what they offer. You will see components that are insanely expensive, and some that are cheap. Look at what seems to be a reasonable price and start making a list of what you think is good in this thread so we can give you a hand. We will check if the parts you choose are compatible and a good price/performance ratio.

By the way, this section of the forum is for questions about motherboards only, but I'm sure a moderator will move this thread to the more general "Desktop Computer" Section.

merely having parts from your vague checklist wont work. each part has specific specs and compatible with certain parts so it's best if you have a general knowledge about each part so you can have an idea of specific parts you want to pick out. then just post it on here and let someone check it :D

OK, thanks for answering.

Yes, I am planning to buy a GeForce 9800 GX2.
By the way, what is the difference between different editions of 9800 GX2?
I have seen eVGA, MSI and much more (over 30). Some are more expensive, some less. What's the real difference?

I have:
Intel Processor Dual Core 2.8 Ghz
Gigabyte GA-945PL-S3 Motherboard with Intel support (Has one PCI-E x16 slot)
2 x 512 MB of RAM
250 GB of Hard Drive (Doesn't matter right?)
Windows XP 32 Bit

I think my motherboard has a PCI-E version 1.1, but GeForce 9800 GX2 says it needs 2.0. Is that a problem?

Apperantly you have PD915. I personally not suggest buying a 9800GX2.
If you have $530, you'd better invest on -
E8400 $200
GA-P35-DS3L (Or get P45 at the end of May) $90
8800GTS 512MB $200
2 x 1GB DDR2 800 $40

And sell your MB and CPU on ebay for $50

why think when you can cheat

One method you can use to build your system is to look at a custom builder online and use them as a cheat sheet. Just an Idea.
