hey, my mom has her own hp computer that i hate but i promised i would try and help fix since i have previously built mine. However, when i try to see what her problem is i cannot figure it out. She has a power saver and the power went out and after the backup battery died it turned off. But now when i try to turn it back on the light around the icon does not flash and nothing starts up.

Can a hard drive still crash even if there is a power backup.

if there are no lights and it doesnt try to boot up, im thinking its going to be the power supply unit (PSU). check the fuses; it could have been fried by a power surge, though its unlikely because it sounds like you had it hooked up to a UPS/battery backup.

and a HDD may suffer data corruption due to power loss, but i dont think it will permanently damage it

It's probably a failed power supply. It's fairly common with power surges and all. Plus I don't really trust UPS systems. I've seen some that didn't put out nearly enough volts. If the one your mom used went dead, it might of put out too few volts and caused some sort of problem with the power supply... Besides the fact that most HP power supplies are junk...
