Computer Problem

Hi,

My friends computer is running Windows Millenium Edition ok.

The computer loads up fine until the desktop photo and appears and the full computer just freezes and doesn't move, all I see is the computer wallpaper, no files are there because it has froze.

Can anyone tell me how to go about repairing this?

his dad doesn't want to upgrade.
Any suggestions on what could be causing this?

Charlie

its windows me being stupid it always does that stuff tell the dad to upgrade its only 100 or so dollars to get windows xp home editon and its defiently worth the upgrade. my dad had windows me but upgraded to xp pro and all the problems went away

Try pressing ctrl alt del before the freeze... see if you can see whats trying to run...if not try safe mode and disable all the strup programs

Guys i agree me sucks, but he is asking how to fix it.. not if he should upgrade.

i had that problem before, before i upgraded to XP reinstalling the OS helped alot , however the problem resumed after a few months.

You can also try system restore to go back to a time when it did not happen. Did you also check for viruses and spywhere?

Can you boot into safe mode? Hold f8 key down when booting computer and select safe mode with networking and then do all the steps in the sticky in the (computer security) section on this forum, maybe you have a virus! Safe mode will just load the files you need to make windows run and from there you will be able to get in and see whats going on. If the computer will not load right in safe mode then you probably have missing or corrupt windows files and it might be best to reinstall OS!

if you have a antivirus disk that will run when you start up the computer, try that to see if there are any viruses or worms on the computer, if not then i would eigther upgrade or reinstall the operating system.
