Computer problems

Hey Guys Hoping to get some help if you would'nt mind.

I am running an old PC ( 2006 build) with a P4 ( just upgraded from a celeron ), only 512 mb DDR Ram ( 2 x 256meg, have been looking for a pair of 1Gig second hand ) and a Gigabyte 81865 MB.

It runs very slow a lot of the time and closing an application - particularly chrome results in the screen very slowly wiping from top to bottom. The P4 has def made a difference in some respects but the net result seems to be that I get from one sticking problem to the next quicker than before.

Also noted, is a program such as iview has the processor running at 100% even when sitting idle on the home page

Any ideas, learned people

Why did I bother

Computerman - if you are not able to read and comprehend the contents of my post then you probably cant help.

Smileman - if your observation regarding my apparent wasted effort in fitting a P4 is all you can manage then you are no help and pls dont bother offering further such enlightening comment

The slow screen wiping can sometimes mean you need the video driver installed. Look in device manager for any entries that have a yellow question mark on them, which means drivers are needed.

When you replaced the processor did you clean off the old thermal paste and reapply new before attaching the heatsink? If you have changed motherboards then you need to reinstall windows fresh. If the system is using 100 percent cpu usage then open task manager and find out what process is using it all up.

Make sure all of your drivers are up to date, check your temperatures, maybe check your RAM using Memtest86. It may be worth reinstalling Windows.

A cheap and low power video card and two gb ram plus a cheap ssd is what you can do to make that computer live again. that is what I did with my old gateway.
cheers
