(JUST REALIZED THIS MIGHT BE IN THE WRONG FORUM)
Hey there, I have a custom built PC with the following specs:
-Intel Prescott 550 3.4 Ghz Processor
-DFI Lanparty UT 915X-T12 Motherboard
-ASUS EAX850XT PE 256MB PCI-E Graphics Card
- GeIL Golden Dragon PC3200 400MHz DDR SO-DIMM 512MB x2 (1GB Total) RAM
- Maxtor Ultra Series 250GB 7200RPM HDD
My computer had great performance when I first ran it, however after a few months, I found noticeable slow down in my games and programs, but I figured it was just the cache and such accumulating on my computer. Being a gamer, it bothered me, but it wasn't threatening.
About two weeks ago, my computer dropped 85% of it's performance. Low end games, high end games, anything had reduced frame-rate to unplayable status. Going from having settings maxed with 100+ FPS, to minimum settings for <20FPS just sucks. My computer was also randomely shutting down, however I found this to be a heating problem (computer would automatically shut down at 85 degrees celsius). Basically I'm getting a new cHeatsink/Fan combo soon (was using stock cooling before), but I didn't figure the heat issue was to affect gameplay.
I rebooted the computer this morning by formating the harddrive and reinstalling windows XP, thinking it could be some sort of virus, or trojan that got past Norton. First thing I did was install two or three games and tried them. They all had better frame rates than when it did just before the reboot, but still cannot reach their old standards.
What is the problem, how can I fix it, and will I be able to reach my old performance standards? After getting the new heatsink (Ultra-120), will I notice performance back up to it's original peak?
Please try to find out what the problem is, I've searched and searched and found nothing, and I'm all out of ideas. This machine has costed me alot of money and to see it crapping out after only a few months of run time would disappoint me, to say the least.
