Computer Problems

wasnt sure where to put this, oh well : P

For christmas this year I got a new motherboard and processor and a new graphics card. Both are PCI express and therefor incompatible with my old ones (people have been suggesting i switch them out one at a time). I took out my old Mobo/proc and gfx card and replaced them with the new ones, found out the new Mobo is designed for SATA drives instead of ATA, mine are ATA. I have 2 ROM drives and 2 harddrives, at least 3 of which i need to have available. so i went out and got a PCI card that gives me 2 extra IDE slots. put it all together and turn it on. it gives me a screen that asks if i want to boot in safe mode, says the screen might be showing up because of hardware changes, so whatever, makes sense... i have tried start normally and start in safe mode and every time it pauses for a second and then restarts.

when i choose safe mode it shows me that it is loading a bunch of files, so i dont think the problem is with my harddrive itself. i have tried every combination of every bios setting i think could possibly be related to boot process. im all out of ideas, any help would be appreciated.

Why couldn't you just hook the IDE drives to your mobo? All mobos as far as I know have PATA (IDE) connections as well as SATA

because there was only one IDE slot. i have 4 devices im trying to use and 3 of them are needed. i currently have my cd rom drives plugged into the mobo and my harddrives plugged into the PCI card, although i have tried it the other way around.

maybe I'm reading into this too much but you say that you are using the same processor and graphics card? ..uh...how?

The problem is almost certainly the previous system drivers (for the chipset and other on-board devices) are still trying to access components that are not there

"I took out my old Mobo/proc and gfx card and replaced them with the new ones, "

im using new mobo, new processor, new gfx card. i have been trying to remove unnecessary components, right now i have a trashy pci graphics card plugged in(which i was using along with my agp one on my old mobo), along with my hard drives(straight into the mobo), memory, mouse, and keyboard. and thats it.

the driver thing makes some sense, how do i fix it? and plugging in the old mobo and processor to get it running and remove old drivers is no longer an option.

you can either get a boot disk and delete the windows directory or format and reinstall

so there are no options for correcting the situation, just starting over? i lost my XP cd... : ( still own a liscence, just no way to install it.

could i boot with something like... uh, whats that linux one that boots off cd? and uninstall drivers somehow?

isnt one of the first things windows does, go through and check the hardware and load appropriate drivers? i thought windows has build in basic drivers that will get whatever hardware up and running untill you install better ones...

if i plug my harddrive into another computer as a slave is there someway i can remove the drivers or make the necessary changes for it to boot? is there anyway to tell it to skip that step in the boot process?

im looking for any options other than reinstalling, because with my experience with windows it seems VERY off that it would have problems adjusting to new hardware to the point of not being able to boot. also, reformatting is a very difficult thing for me to do right now...
