Computer Protection

I will first admit that my computer knowledge is not extremely high. So I am in the market for a new computer and I do not want to spend the amount of money that Norton charges for antivirus, internet protection and all that. So I found that you can download them for free.

For example:

My question is will this do everything that the Norton programs will and be enough protection for my computer? Is there ever a point you have to pay? Why do people pay so much for Norton if this is free?

The first thing you want to determine is if your Windows OS is 32-bit or 64 bit. There are some great security products that are still, unfortunantly, limited to 32-bit OS (such as Online Armor firewall) and some aren't ready for Windows 7.

The best thing you can do is to visit their websites and they will be able to tell you the system specs required. here are a few suggestions and this list certainly isn't exshaustive:

Good free antivirus: Avast and Avira; they also have$ versions.

Good $ antivirus: NOD32 and Kaspersky

Firewalls: Comodo, Online Armor (also has a $ version and they are working on a 64-bit version), Outpost

* Malewarebytes and Superantispyware are two of the best for malware/spyware.

i love microsoft security essentials, never thought i would use any other software by Microsoft other then windows....i guess never say never hehe
