computer randomly freezing

Well, my pc decides sometimes to jsut freeze up. I have no idea whats causing it, and so no idea how to solve it.
the screen jsut freezes, and the pc doesnt respond to anything anymore, except hitting the reset button or cutting the power ofcourse.

so, how do I start searching for the problem? (note: this pc did this before, so its not likely its the grafic's card driver or so, it jsut stopped doing that someday tough, and now its back :( )
 
First thing I would check are temps.. download a program to monitor them and check if they are unusually high. Make sure all the fans are running too.
 
You could also scan your computer with Adaware or similar, some worms can cause this problem. One of my old machines did exactly that and that was the problem.
 
Another good program for temperatures would be Speedfan, it supports most motherboard, it just scans your motherboard for any temperature sensors and then display them. Check your temperatures to determine if its a hardware or software issue, it could be that your Windows operating system is playing up, in that case its just simply reinstalling it.
 
I know its not the temps, because I played Crysis for example for over 3 hours (yea, not healthy, I know) and nothing happened. ofcourse, that was after I set the memory timings to a fixed value yesterday, so maybe that was it. (at least, i heard people say asus boards can be picky when it comes to RAM? :x) anyways, I'll keep watching it, if it freezes again, I know it wasnt that, if it doesnt, well, happy me ^^

I had an old Asus Slot 1 motherboard. I had around 30 sticks of SDRAM. I found only one stick that would work. One PC66 16MB stick...

If you messed with the settings and timings... It might've gotten unstable. You could always reset your CMOS and see if that makes a difference.
 
Archangel, think carefully. Just before this problem started, what had you changed? Did you install a new software application? Download a new Windows Update? A new piece of hardware? Did you visit a never before seen website?

Last week my PC suddenly started freezing for apparently no reason. After three days of memtest, defragging, chkdsk-ing, AV scans, spyware scans, driver removals and reinstallations, I finally found out that it was a small 288KB hard drive indicator program. Just 288KB! Something is different now that wasn't there before on your PC.
 
ran memtest, it froze once (after 10 minutes running, errorfree) the 2nd time it complted, errorfree.

the problem as far as I know started when I got this processor and motherboard iirc :x
but then it was like 1 freeze in like 2 weeks or so, so I assumed it was windows beeing messy. now that i got Vista, it crashes a lot more tough. wich gave me an idea really.

I looked on the internet, turns out, this motherboard officially doesnt support Quad core processors. (this I already knew, I jsut kinda forgot about it :s ) the chipset however does support quad corse (from the Bios version 801 and 901, mine is flashed to 901)
this could mean maybe that when the pc starts using 3 or 4 cores, maybe the power it drains is too big for the voltage regulators next to the cpu to handle, causing the voltage in the cpu to drop, resulting in jibberish there.
It really the only thing I can think of as a logical explonation, maybe it is that, maybe its not, I just cant be certain :(
 
is it possible for an SATA dvd drive to cause this problem?

this is the BSOD i get (a lot sometimes) when trying to boot up windows.
 
This is a common blue screen. It refers to a driver or a hardware conflict. First of all, it's handy to check your HDD on errors. And you said that this mobo doesn't support your cpu? Well... I think that's the problem. Because as I said before, this problem only occurs when you have a driver or a hardware that isn't really compatible with something.
