computer restarting

hey all i have had a prob for sometime now, my computer restarts during games about 10-20 mins and recently just doing it in the middle of burning, now i can here you all go aww why not search through the posts, yes well i am lazy and there is so much to go through, sorry about that.


i have a celeron 2.5 cpu, asus p4s533motherboard nvidia geforce 6200 video card, 1gig ram, 40gig hard drive, and just installed a new psu 500w unit.
any suggestions that i could tryout to resolve the prob???

Besides XP's crash control that will auto restart a system to avoid system locks when a program crashes you could be looking at a supply problem if you bought either a defective or simply cheapie brand supply. You could be looking at problems with either overheating or memory faults being seen. Have you looked over the system temps at all? The cpu or memory are two likely candidates if the supply is reliable.
 
yeah sometimes it comes up with program error. or device error but doesn't say what, overheatingis ruled out i think nothing hot in the system. fan on the video card and another fan in the system. i was thinking about turning down the rate of the cpu, but i couldn't change it in the bios it only had 2 modes either 2.5 or 3.33, or manual which i can't figure out which one to choose.

just got new memory in the system too... should i just give up? and send it in to somebody??
 
Were you seeing these problems before or after installing the new memory? If the memory is the wrong type or simply not favored by Asus that could be half of the problem there. Are your video and sound drivers updated? But don't rule out something from overheating if you have nothing to monitor temps with like the hardware monitor in the bios or a software for this.

some those problems due to.
1. short or grounded powersupply connection
2. hardrive bad sectors
3. unstable motherboard due to wrong memory type.
 
nope its just been the same as before i installed the memory and video card, don't know about the device drivers how do i check for that is there an automatic program that can run through what i need to update?

downloading the program as we speak so i'll try that out thanks for your helping.
 
It wouldn't be bad sectors on the drive since that would cause problems just trying to load Windows. One thing that could be a problem is a weak battery on the board if it's not something overheating. Since this was seen before swapping memory out you probably have something else going.
 
A bad sector develops after something is installed. If Windows can't read portions of a drive it works around for the most part or you end up with an impartial installation. If there is no indication of overheating it doesn't rule out a few others like a hardware failure or some type of driver conflict taking place.

One thing to look at here is this happens when there is a load on the cpu. When gaming and burning disks alike there is also more demand on power as well. You may want to look to see if the cpu fan is working or cluttered with dust and debris. A failing chipset? Weak battery?
 
so downloaded speedfan i have 4 temperatures, temp1: 27c temp2:127 temp3: 127c and hdo temp: 34c
what does this mean? how can i configure it to bring the high ones down? i do have a bit of dust inside the machine too.
 
If you look at the "read info" screen the #1 temp is for the cpu itself. The #2 temp is for the board. On the Asus board here the Asus Probe I and Probe II temp utilities indicated cpu=39C board=34C compared to SpeedFan's temp #1=39C temp #2=34C. For you model board the Asus Probe II can be found in the utility folder on the board's cd or downloaded from the Asus support site.

On looking at the cpu it seems almost unbelievable for a P4 type cpu. The board temp looks "off the chart". The 127C temp there should seeing smoke signals coming out of the case. I don't believe the sensors are being read correctly. But you could try pointing a small fan at the inside of the case with the side panel off to see if you notice an improvement.

The two main things to try here are additional cooling fans and a bios update if you haven't done that. With a board temp of 127C there's no way the cpu can be down anywhere near 27C. But the first thing here is to get some air moving after you use a can of compressed air to clean out the cpu fan along with the rest of the case. With SpeedFan still installed run the Probe II and compare the results. That could be a glitch with SpeedFan.
 
k have asus prob2 it says the chassis fan and the power fan is below threshold but both are running???
what about if the voltage spikes a little is this enough to cause a restart?
has anybody had an experience with the settings in this program? whats an optimal setting that i set all the options too?
and the bios is updated just last week

These two programs have graphs for monitoring temps and voltages alike. The threshold is set to where you would want an audio alarm to go off or see the system restart or simply shutdown when either the cpu or board temp climbed to high. This avoids permanent damage to the hardwares.

When you first the voltage graph you will often the line drop ar first until the actual level is being read for each device. Here you would want to leave things at the default settings unless you know which each does. You can raise or lower voltage settings for cpu and other devices.
