Computer runs very slow

I've have had my laptop for over a year now and everything has been working fine since. Till today. All of a sudden, my computer runs extremely slow when I start up a game or watch a movie or something. Just browsing seems to work fine, but whenever I start multitasking, it completely fails. I used to never have this problem before. I used to even been able to run a game on high settings and watch a movie at the same time. I even had an external screen plugged in! The only thing that has changed is that I installed a new game.

First I uninstalled the game, but the problem remained. Then I scanned the computer multiple times for viruses (using AVG and Norton), but still no dice. I defragmentated the disc and cleared all the pointless and old programs, but, shamefully, it still runs very slow when I start up any game (which used to work fine). I also disconnected the external screen.

I do see that, when I start up a game or even when I start up my browser (firefox), the CPU usage meter shoots up the air! Sometimes all of the four cores just randomly shoot up to a 100% and remain there for about a minute.
RAM seems to stay fine (at about 40% usage)

For example, whilst typing this thread, the meter randomly shoots up to 97% and stays there for a minute. During that minute typing is very slow and framerate drops to 3fps or something, and my browser is the only program that's running!

SPECS
I have a HP Pavilion dv6 laptop with:
Intel i5 (2,53 GHz)
4Gb RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
Intel HD graphics (somehow I have two graphic cards?...)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bits
 
ok, I think you have the right idea scanning for viruses, but the wrong implementation. Do not rely on Norton at all (I have had many maleware infections, and norton never found any of them). What i would do is download Malewarebytes (it is THE scanner for maleware and viruses) and run a full scan. There is more to do but start here and see if it finds anything.

And as for your graphics cards, it is possible to have two. The Intel HD is integrated to your processor, they all have that one. The HD5650 is a dedicated card. You probably have a auto switching setup, where it uses the intel card for most things and graphically intense things process on the HD5650.

I downloaded the software and performed a full scan. It indeed found a few things and I deleted them. But, unfortunately, it did not work. When playing a game it still malfunctions; about 3fps and stammering sound.

Can you post the malwarebytes log along with a hijackthis log? The malwarebyetes log is located on the logs tab when you open the program. Open the log for the scan you did and copy and paste the contents into your next reply. For a hijackthis scan, do this.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

When the hijackthis log appears in a notepad file, click on the edit menu, click select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Come back to your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log
 
In my opinion i would do a fresh install of windows. Backup your files, Format HDD :D enjoy yur speeds fly up.
If you do not want to *restart* buy AVG pc tuneup it is amazing software :P.
 
The easiest way is to format the laptop. U dont need to waste ur time by struggling this problem. Once ur computer infected it is difficult to restore back normal state. Easy way is the format the laptop.
