computer shuts down before desktop loads

I have a E Machines T5254 and it shuts downs after it says starting windows.

If i go to the bios settings before the start up, it will stay there as long as i want and wont shut down. as soon as i continue, it asks if i want to start windows normally or try to fix the problem and repair, either one i click the next thing it does is shut off.

i dont think its the power supply because it only shuts down right before it goes to the desktop and at no other time.

this is a vista system but i have a windows 7 cd so i put it in thinking my OS is bad so i would install a better one, well it runs the disk tells me to press any key to boot, then it loads the windows files, says starting windows, and shuts down.

what can i do? im a novice when it comes to this so any helpful info is greatly appreciated.

I've seen this before, usually means you either have a bad hard drive or at least errors on it that cause it to shut down. What brand of hard drive is it? You would have to download the drive manufacturers disk diagnostic utility and run the extended test to scan the drive for errors and hopefully fix them.

How far does it get into the Starting Windows process? Do you get the Windows logo for example?

When it shuts down does it just complete turn off, or is there a blue screen/other error message?

As noted in johnb35's response, it could be the hard drive. But then again it could be what's on the hard drive, too. Some moderators have implied it unnecessary, but yours proves the value of the following (which I keep in a txt file for easy access):

Download SystemRescueCD 1.3.5* from SourceForge. Burn it to CD at no more than 8X. Boot to it (change boot order in BIOS, if necessary). Let it load up, hit <Enter> a couple times for the Default choice sysresccd asks for from User. Then, at the multi-colored prompt on the page that asks User to enter either "wizard" or "startx," type the following command, instead (cut and paste it from here to eliminate chance of error):

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=4096 conv=notrunc,sync

Put on the kettle (or whatever) because writing zeros to the hard drive, which is what the dd command above does, will take a while, depending on the size of the hard drive. When finished, some statistics following something like "out of space" and the rate at which zeros were written in "xx MB/sec" for about four lines, will appear.

Your hdd is now full of nothing but zeros, if all went correctly, and should behave as a new hard drive would. If not, the problem is the drive itself, more than likely.

Should partitioning the hard drive be desired, enter at the same prompt the command "startx," which will bring up the XFCE mouse logo and then a yellow-colored terminal. In this terminal type in the command "gparted" and enter it. This will result in the famed partitioning tool, gparted, initiating. Go to it and partition the hdd, if tests prove it to be okay.
