hey guys, i build a new computer and its shutting down since. i installed asus probe and the most common procedure is i put on the computer cpu temp. shows 42 degrees. i start a program the temp goes up to 47 degrees then it shuts down. sometimes however i put it on, dont do anything. it heats up slowly up to 57 then it shuts down after hours. its a boxed cooler it came with the pentium 4 2.4 GHZ, mainboard asus p4c 800 deluxe. my bios has the default settings. is it the cooler ? is there a problem with the mainboard ? can i do some more tests to know specific what could be the real problem ? thanx 4 ur help.

check the bios settings for hardware monitoring. Asus has auto shutdowns built in i believe, check if this is your problem, 57 is high but i think it's still in parameters. Run a log of voltages (asus probe will do this) till your computer shuts down to see if it is a psu issue. As well check the bios to see if the proc fan is shut down while in standby, your proc shouldn't be heating up like that just sitting iddling.

The temperature is well within the limits but there is probably something wrong with the cooler, either the fan isn't spinning on the heatsink or the heatsink isn't making proper contact. Running default bios settings means you aren't overclocking or running a high core voltage (this is assuming you haven't flashed a new bios version). If the core voltage is not within 10% of what it's set for in the bios there is a problem with the boards power circuitry.

Quite correct about the autoshutdown but 57 is by no means high.

Indeed but having more voltage than spec'd is less likely to cause a restart/shutdown than not enough (up to a point of course) .... what are the voltage levels for your various rails?
