I built my brothers computer a year ago and it has worked fine...etc recently he will be using it and after about and hour or so just shuts down completely. Now, it doesn't even get through the whole boot process before it just shuts down... any ideas what the problem might be??

intell 3gig, 1gig mem,

That doesn't really give us a whole lot of info...Think you could name some of the parts? Like as an example, Intel Pentium 4, 2.4 Ghz, 512MB of RAM, Asus mobo, etc etc...

As for the problem...RAM? Motherboard? Something corrupt in the system files, or a possible virus. It could be a number of things.

I had a problem like that along with another issue with my computer. Mine at first, the screen would flicker or blink once and reboot and tell me that windows didn't start properly and give me the option of starting in safe mode. Eventually it got to where I would hear a clicking sound in my computer, about 3 clicks, and then it would turn off. Then it would be hard for me to get it to start back up. I would have to hold the start button in for 8 seconds or so until the green light to the left of the button turned off, then press the start button again. Sometimes I would have to go through that for 5 times to get it to start back up. I asked someone about it and was told to suspect my power supply. I bought one for $30 and put it in and that took care of the turning off problem and getting it to start. But there is still an issue with rebooting. If I take out either one of the two 512mb memory modules everything is fine.

its a pent 3.2 gig.
geforce grafics card
1gig memory

I dusted cpu fan, and pc parts.
changed graphics card...wasn't it...so I put the origanl back in.
made sure all connections to motherboard were secure.
made sure all cards were seated properly and secure.

Sometime computer boots up all the way into win xp before shutting down...other times shuts down during start-up.
I thought it might be my harddrive, so I put another one in. It is not a hard drive problem.

could memory be the issue??
