Computer slow and Outlook has stopped

There is no sense in buying software you don't need. You don't need a firewall when windows firewall and your router's firewall is all you need. Antirootkit and antispyware software is available for free.

Cheers mate, thanks for that. I don't know these things unless I ask. As you know, people will sell you anything (that's how I wound up with Mcafee). Thanks to your dedication to this site, I now know better.

I'll be running Avast free and Malwarebytes free ONLY as per your advice.

Avast is installing as I type. Once it is up and running, I'll be saying au revoir to Mcafee.

Troy

Thankyou for the advice bigfella but I saw your post too late.

In any case, I was worried about uninstalling McAfee BEFORE I had something else to protect me. I've done a bit of reading on this site and some people are not that worried about AV. Me??? I'm a tad above average when it comes to computers so I'd rather be safe than sorry. Some of my questions may seem dumb and basic (not that you implied that :) ) but it's the dumb question one doesn't ask (Do I really need a condom?) that gets one in trouble (Good evening Mr Powell, this is Tom from Child Support..... :) )

In any case, I installed Avast and then uninstalled McAfee. Malwarebytes from when I've had previous infections.

I gather from what I've read on Malwarebytes program that I have to run that program manually, i.e., only the paid version runs scans automatically and also updates automatically?

Regards,
Troy

You should NEVER have more than one antvirus installed. The avast installation could be a 'side by side' installation or corrupt. Disconnect the internet, uinstall Avast restart, and then reinstall it.
