Computer slow as hell!

My computer's been really playing up lately. When the windows XP screen appears when loading Windows, it takes, up to 5 minutes sometimes before it has loaded to the desktop screen. Then it takes an ion to load everything else, and the computer is generally slow at everything.
I have nothing that is running in the background that is slowing it down, also I don't have many things in my startup tray. Also done virus check, spyware, etc Then defragged my harddrive. Also updated drivers etc...

I think it could be a motherboard or CPU problem, but don't wanna upgrade until im sure.

Can anybody tell me what the problem could be? Would really appreciate it :)

hell is slow???? ok...... and you might want to do a registry clean. Here is a good, free link to one

I think the one you are referring to is the RegCleaner if I am correct as well as other freeware and shareware utilities. http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads15.html
System slowdowns can also be attributed to an overheating problem. Some free monitoring programs like SpeedFan can be a help in alerting you when temps are climbing or voltages are incorrect. http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
Have you updated the bios at all?
 
I haven't tried that one yet. But I have been working with RegCleaner since I ran across it a few years ago. It works with all versions of Windows and is FREE! It's an easy program to use and to instruct others on. It has proven itself worthwhile on many occasions.

Because then you can't check off anything that needs checked to run your computer. And Pc eye I use reg cleaner too and ya it is good too.

Most of the MS background services like svghost.exe, services.exe, winlogon, and others including explorer have to remain running or the system would stall. The idea of hiding those items is to prevent accidentially disabling the essential services when going to troubleshoot installed programs. Running a good registry cleaner every once in awhile also helps in cleaning out useless entries in the registry that can effect overall system performance.
 
Naaaa sorry peeps, non of those programmes helped at all. I spoke to this computer tech guy and he said it's probably the hard drive. I thoght it might have been because I checked the event viewer and it said the hard disk was imminent for failure. I did take tha tinto account originall but I checked the event viewer every day and it no longer showed the message.....But I guess that's it! I will blame my brother cos he gave the computer a huge bang one day...and....OPP, the next day as well.....was all an accident, but he's bloody careless.. Cheers anyhows guys!
 
A few hard impacts never help with anything. Keep an eye on any other items found in the event viewer in case you see some indicating bad blocks or sectors on the hard drive. If you start seeing a steady repeat listing then you can assume the drive will completely fail one day soon. But I've often seen those for a few days after movind a case around with no power on.
 
Is it possible there might be the wrong driver installed to a piece of hardware, on Windows 98 in control panel => system, a red mark on one of the "what's it" might slow things down a bit.

Once when I was looking at a "old" computer, when I reinstalled correct drivers things went a bit faster.

just a bit of New Zealand news at the moment.
 
Well the one thing to point out here is that this is being seen on an XP not 98 system. XP will auto update drivers with it's own search engine. When you go into the device manager and right click on the drive that will see the "device working properly" message on the properties screen. But check disk is there to use to see if that's only a temporary glitch or clear indication of the drive being on the way out. You probably have a misaligned drive head since tha case was banged around. You may be hearing one of those stuttering due to that.
 
Just to let you know it was the hard drives fault after all! Is running like a bitch now :) Only problem was that i'd forgotten how much of an arse it was to get it running ok again. Had about 92 viruses installed littery just after I was back online! Sorted now (after 5 hours of fiddling around....) Need a rest now!
 
It sounds like you need to put some strong pesticide on your drive there to clean it a little. I always just love working with drives loaded with....? That's the perfect time to try out new cleaners.

If you have the Windows XP disc, just reformat the hardrive and reinstall Windows. If you have the manufacturer's system restore (not Windows restore), that will delete everything on the hardrive and reinstall all the software the same way it was when you first bought it. Unfortunately, a reinstall of OS needs to be done atleast once a year.
