Computer slower since reformatting

athlon 64 3200+
direct x 9.0c
1024megs ram
main hard drive about 1/3 full
page file 1.5-3 gigs
all the windows updates installed, most of the newest drivers

I just reformatted my hard drive after getting a virus. It was the full reformat that took a few hours, just to be safe. My problem is while playing world of warcraft (not a very new game), the hard drive is constantly writing and whenever I move it slows up. It's not too severe but it's a new problem. I've heard people say my hard drive might be damaged...I'm hoping not. Now that all my updates are done and I can't find any programs responsible for this, I don't know what else to do. Thanks.

also, my framerate is decent but the screen pauses a lot while waiting for my hard drive to finish writing :-/

Darn, lost the bet..lol

But still, you may want to download an older set of drivers for the card. I can't use any of the drivers dated past october 2009 or my card crashes all the time. I have the ATI HD3870.
 
One more thing...I have three hard drives in my computer, and the game's installed on my windows hard drive. Would it help installing it on a separate one?
 
Try running a disk check. My Computer > Right Click C Drive > Properties > Tools > Check Now

Check both boxes and hit start, it should say that it will run on the next start. Restart your computer.

Question: Does the computer perform poorly overall or only when playing WoW?
 
You have windows installed on your older slower drive. Reinstall windows to your seagate drive. You only have 1gb of ram, get another gig of ram and you should be set to go.
 
You're not going to see a noticeable difference between those two drives without viewing a benchmark.

I suspect that you need something like DBAN to clean off the disk. I ran into this problem a long time ago after reformatting Windows XP on a machine that had a severe virus. As it turns out, wiping the disk with DBAN fixed the issue.

You will see a large difference between the two drives. The SeaGate one has 4 times the cache of the Maxtor and the design of it is much better. You will get better read/write and faster response times which will make the system much snappier.
 
After reading this, I tried installing wow on my faster hard drive. It was giving me problems, so I thought uninstalling wow from my old drive would help (OOPS). The problem is "lost connection to downloader," and now it's giving bsod's sometimes...I made sure my antivirus and firewall were allowing it, and even uninstalled the antivirus to make sure (got that advice from blizzard forums). I also tried installing it on my third drive, getting the same problem. Could this be strictly software-related?
 
Turns out I just had to uninstall my firewall too. Everything's working, and yes WoW runs much faster now. Memory passed the test btw. Thanks for all the advice.
