Computer Speed Help

Hi,
Im new to the forums.
I dont know much about the insides of computers so thought id sign up and ask here for some help.

Recently my computer has been running and opening/closing programs alot slower than they used to and im not quite sure what is wrong. I have 80g hard drive with 40g of it still free to store other things so i dont think that can be the problem. I have tried running my virus checker and disk clean up's but nothing seems to be moving any faster.
Maybe its something to do with needing extra RAM, but as i already said i dont know much about the insides of computers so i cant be sure.

My system is as follows:-
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+
1.67GHz
256mb of RAM

If anymore details are needed i can look for it if you are able to solve my problem.

Thanks for any help,
Chris

is this a windows XP system? In anycase, as a general rule adding RAM will make things faster. Try defragging the harddrive if you haven't already. Also pick up a program like Ad-aware (www.lavasoft.com) and scan for spyware.

Hi cromewell,

Yes it is an XP system. I have tried defragmenting and i also have the ad-aware program installed but nothing i do seems to work.

Does it matter what type of RAM i buy? will certain RAM only work on certain systems? I wouldnt want to go out and buy some only to find it is not compatible with my computer.

Thanks for replying, much appreciated!

There is also one other thing that might be the problem. When i open the task manager, it tells me i have 48 processes running, does that seem a little high to you? Considering the only window i have open other than the task manager is this one (the internet window).

Chris

Check what is running in MS-Config (start-up). To see (and disable) what boots up with Windows, Go to Start--Run--(type in) msconfig--start-up tab. Also, here's a program that you can use to disable unecessary items/programs from starting up: http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html

If you want, save a text-file copy of the scanned log and paste the text into your next post for us to see. We can tell you what is needed, and what is not needed if you need help or have any questions.

Thanks, i will run the hijack program right now, in the meantime i have written down all the processes running on my computer when i log on, just incase theres something in there thats the problem, this is them :-

Once again thanks for your help... glad i found this site! lol

Chris

The amount of hard drive space and ram seem to be good, go to www.download.com and get a program called Tune-Up Utilities and have it check the registry, usually if you have installed and uninstalled a lot of programs, it fills up the registry with junk. So try using that software and maybe that will help. Also, get ad-aware and make sure u have no adware or spyware, which can slow down ur computer.

Thanks geoff, that tune-up program seems to have helped a little. found quite a few errors actually.
Think i will still but some extra RAM for the pc though as i have some spare money to spend.
If anyone has a particular favorite 256/512 RAM model that would work in my comp, let me know. If no one has one, i appreciate all the help so far, great website this!

:)
Chris

What motherboard do you have?
If you can find this out then people will be ble to help (including myself :P)

It's important because some mobo's can only take certain types/speed of RAM and getting the wrong one could be rather disasterous :o

Ok, this is all the things i found when i opened the case of my comp.

P4 Mercury (ATX Switching Power Supply)
Gigabyte AGP 8X
KOB AP4 300CE (300W)

These details were written in certain places around the motherboard so if they're wrong.... is there a place in the control panel i can find the correct details?
Sorry for the lack of info, i aint too good at this stuff lol.

Check-mark-click all this in HijackThis after scanning. Click "FixChecked". If you use ThemeXP to customize your desktop or use all of Yahoo's services, then leave those entries alone. If not, check-mark them and hit Fix Checked. Then exit the program and reboot.
