Computer stuttering when i play games?

Hi. I dont know alot about computers but this is starting to annoy me now.

The computer seems to be fine when im using it to look over the internet or for youtube videos. However when i start playing a game, its fine for a random amount of time, then the screen starts skipping every few seconds and audio skips also and it disconnects from wifi.

Id say it does it between a few minutes to around a few hours but it seems completely random. Then only way i can get it to work again is by forcing my computer to shut down?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi mate, welcome to CF

3D gaming is very different to 2D websites and desktop work... 3D gaming requires a lot more computational grunt, power and creates a lot more heat.

From my experience, your issue is either:

  1. Overheating components / poor airflow
  2. Inadequate Power Stability/Quality
  3. Insufficient graphics card

In that order.

Given that you 'can' play for a while, it indicates that the graphics card (GPU) is probably sufficient.

To give us an idea of your hardware, please download PC Wizard from my signature and install it on the affected computer. Run it, and go to FILE, SAVE AS and CLICK OK. Copy the text out of that file into this thread.

If its a Desktop PC (not a laptop), please try and locate the stick on the side of the Power Supply Unit (inside the computer), and provide the model number (wattage information isn't enough). It will look a bit like this:

Your hardware look all fine to me. Done any virus scans recently?

You might be overheating also. Download HWMonitor and see what your temperatures are on your CPU and GPU while playing games.

ok i just tried that software and i have also tried numerous virus scans recently as i thought that could be the problem, but to no avail!

The readings on my graphics card was reading 53, and the 4 cores in my cpu are all between 41 and 44, but i dont know what theyre supposed to say so it doesnt mean alot to me!

ive been playing wildstar recently and it seems to be fine unless i join a pvp match. It also does the same on battlefield, i.e its fine in the lobby, but as soon as i start playing it can start messing around.

I forgot to mention in the original post that once i force restart my computer it appears to be fine. It usually does it around 5 minutes after i start playing and after that i have played for hours and had no problem, other than once. No idea if this is just random though.

Done a fresh install of your video card drivers?

Your temperatures are fine. I assume those are the temps you're getting AS you're playing your game. If it's just when you're sitting on your desktop or running a web browser that doesn't do much good. It matters when it's actually at load.

The time i took the temperatures was about 30 seconds before crashing. And no i havent. To do a fresh install do i just install from the disc or do i have to uninstall first?

After doing the graphics driver update that Denther requested, we need to install the chipset drivers correctly, but it also possibly points to a network drivers, so we will go through the complete process:

  1. Download and install chipset drivers
  2. Restart
  3. Update Java (required for the next step)
  4. Go here and scan your system
  5. Download every update it identifies to your desktop (don't install yet)
  6. Individually install each one, restarting after each install.
  7. Restart after last of any updates are installed.
  8. Download and install Intel Management Engine
  9. Restart
  10. Download your network drivers from here and install
  11. Restart
  12. Update Direct X
  13. Restart
  14. Verify the integrity of each game in steam (right click, properties, local files, verify integrity)
  15. Verify or validate games in Origin.
  16. Right click on Windows Drive, select properties and Tools and then Check.
  17. Let it finish.
  18. Open command prompt as an Administrator (by typing cmd in the search bar, right clicking on it and selecting Run as Adminsitrator)
  19. Type (with spaces):
    sfc /scannow
  20. Let it finish
  21. Restart
  22. Update Windows.
  23. Install Samsung Magician Software - run it and ensure it has the latest BIOS and conduct a performance optimisation

Report back.

Failing the above helping, I would test your memory by downloading Memtest, burning it a CD (CD is big enough / although DVD would work too), and boot from it. Test memory overnight, but im confident the above procedure with a fresh graphics driver install will sort it.
