computer super slow

We have a Dell Inspiron 1100, Windows XP, SP2, Intel Celeron 2.40GHz, 2.39 GHz. 256 MB RAM

Can someone tell me what processes MUST be running in the background??? This thing is moving like molasses in winter!

Some of the processes you need running are things like.
taskmgr.exe
rundll32.exe
SOUNDMAN.exe (if you want sound)
explorer.exe
ctfmon.exe

Also try some virus scans, usually when your computer is so slow you may have viruses. Also try downloading things like Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware and look for spyware/adware
 
SOUNDMAN.exe? i dont have tht running and ive got sound. (i think its for your soundcard) and ctfmon.exe i dont have either, again possibly for your system
 
Hey I had that Problem too. With the same system information.
YOu should run the Ad-aware and Spy Bot (Both available at www.download.com, at no cost) to make sure that you are not in a jungle of adware or spyware....
Any program that you are not sure of, which is running you can just go to google or any common search engine and search it. It will give you the proper information you need to understand that process.
You can check which proceses are running By Simply Presssing Crtl+Alt+Delete....
and you can open start menu click on run and type msconfig in the box to view your startup programs........
