Computer through TV

Hello computerforum hows it going,

I've got a friend who's thinking of buying a PC, but he would use it connected to a HD TV only.
He doesn't have space for a desk and monitor etc.
He would do everything like you would normally do on a PC; word process, games etc.
And i was wondering would this be okay as in would you be able to read the text while word processing comfortably and what other issues are they that i havent thought of?

Oh and what connections should be considered when buying the TV HDMI or DVI..

Thanks a lot to any help.
Much appreciated.

OK.... what inputs are in the TV... mine has a AVG port and i use that when i need to....

Now what games will he be playing and we can help build a system.

Hey mate thanks for you reply.

He hasn't yet bought the TV but I know he says he isnt going to buy anything bigger than about 26inch so this is basically just like a slightly larger than normla monitor, yeah? Any help on what ports to consider when buying the TV would help a lot.

Thanks for the offer of building a system but it will be a few weeks before he buys the computer and I'll probably put a build together closer to the time :)

The main thing is that I just want to be reassured to be honest that it will work runnign a computer primarily through a TV.

Oh and is HDMI a good way to connect to a TV or should I try and hunt a TV with DVI in?

Thanks a lot to any help.

HDMI is good for some things..... but i don't know if you can get them but if you HDMI see if you can get a HDMI to VGA or DVI adaptor and connect it that way...

DVI
Everything will look very nice except for fast action games.
TVs don't quite have the same response time that PC monitors have.
He might get some blurring on fast action games.

the blurring would be slight and odds are he wouldnt notice it. text might look small but there are simple remedies for that, (like in firefox just hold ctrl and use the scroll wheel to change text size)

i would use only DVI in this setup, VGA cant handle very high resolutions and to me the picture quality is somewhat worse. oh and i would recommend an HD resolution of 1080i or 1080P only.

Too bad none of them knew what they were talking about though.... :(

One thing I specialize in is HTPC.. In fact I'm typing this on one.

Typical 1080i native resolution is 1366x768. They'll accept 1080p signals in most cases, but they scale the signal down. The result is not the greatest text output from an HDMI source. They're also interlaced and display @ 30 FPS. 1080p panels, on the other hand, have a native resolution of 1920x1080 @ 60 FPS, progressive scan. The difference is astounding. I've played with both.

Next fallacy. DVI is not the way to go. HDCP compliant HDMI is (HDMI is video and audio as well). The best way to go is to buy a motherboard with an HDMI output built onto the board. A great example is the P5E-VM HDMI, which is what I use in most of my HTPC configs. It uses an Intel sound codec to broadcast the audio over the HDMI. It also broadcasts HD video over the same cable.

I use the Dsub connector for the touch screen.

This is a very new field, as the technology has only recently caught up. As you can tell, most people know very little about it and even less about how to effectively implement it.

Thanks sir kenin thats some really useful advice, helped me out loads.
Yeh it is pretty new stuff and I've never really done anything like it before thats why its a bit daunting.

Thanks a lot to all
salman.
