Im sure this is where I would post this...

Anyhow, im getting my gaming computer soon. How do I transfer stuff from the old one to the new one, which cable do I need, and is any software needed. Thanks.

what are you inteding to transfer over??? any games/programs will need to be reinstalled on the new machine. It's unlikely that you will be able to copy a large program from one disk to another without running into issues.

As for your personal files, vidoes, pictures, etc. There are a few ways to transfer them over
1. Just copy them on a disk or other media
2. Network the two machines, you can do this directly machine the machine with a network cable and a crossover. Or you can network them over a router.

What are you intending to do with the old machine anyway?

Game programs

I disagree. Most games programs act as sort of a client to DirectX so the only thing it does to the registry is add a program entry and it does not add any files to the Windows system. If you transfer the directory and any files it has put into MyDocuments, the program will run properly but it will ask you to re-enter your CD key for the registry program entry.

only the very simplest programs/games will allow this. And the missing registry entries will cause a lot more hassle than just asking for the cd. fact.

Umm, I just need to move files and music and pictures and stuff. I plan on doing a complete virus clean, and uninstall all the crap I have on this one, and use as my "Office computer".

You can either use a Flash drive, cd, dvd, external hard drive, or a network.

And apj is right, most games cant be moved from one comp to another by simply copying the game folder. The only game that i was sucessfully able to do that to was unreal tournament 2003 demo. And not to mention that all your configurations and stuff would be lost.

Can someone post the cable I need to link the 2 computers together, are they expensive... I see them as a good investment.

they are called cat-5 cables if u are gonna connect them using a router. or u can just go wireless and get a wireless network card, (inorder for this to work, ur router has to have wireless capabilities too) and yea. very cheap.. couple of dollars.
