COMPAQ desktop with XP home

the standby option is not selectable and when i click on start to turn off the computer the computer just restarts.. it restarts fine but doesnt turn off

i have to use the power button to turn off

Do the following:

Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties
On the Advanced tab, under the Startup and Recovery section press Settings
Under the System Failure section uncheck the Automatically restart option

Now try shutting down, and if you get a blue screen, it should give you some sort of error code that may help pin down what is wrong.
