Computer turns on then strait off

Hello again my problem this time is on a build I am doing to teach my dad.

He wants a computer that is faster than all the others he has so I got him the best for his budget. I have all the parts except the graphics card and DVD drive right now but have an issue that needs to be amended.

When you plug everything in and press the power button the computer flashes on then turns strait off. (Have a video of it if anyone doesn't understand which I can upload). If I hold the power button it still only flashes on. I know it does power up because all fans start whirling and LEDs come on for a fraction of a second.

Any suggestions on what this could be, my guess is a dodgy button that does not stay pressed.

Thanks

Jon

Doesnt sound like over heating to me, sounds like something is shorting the motherboard or youve got a faulty compnonent

Before you buy any other parts check to make sure nothing is shorting out like taylormsj said. I also believe its not overheating as because if it was your pc would at least stay on for a while before shutting it self down. If you can confirm that its not because of shorting or your motherboard then i'd suggest taking a look at your power supply. Thats what might be faulty.

What are your system specs.... Like power supply/wattage and other components your using.

1. Definitely not over heating it stays on for about 1/2 a second with all fans working.
2. How do I check if its something causing it to short?
3. Power supply is CRAP it came with the case and the case was only about £30 lol Unless there is not enough power going down the rail
4. I know its not a lack of power as it did this when all I had installed was just the CPU
5. CPU was bought off Ebay and did not come in a box maybe it was faulty.
6. Computer specs are;-
- E6600
- 2 x 1 GB Corsair 675mb ram
- 2 x Western Digital 160Gb HDD
- Asus P5B
- Extra Value ATX Midi 400w

I know its nothing to do with the ram and HDD as it did the same when they were not attached.

could be a bad power supply. i'd switch that with yours to see if it'll resolve the problem

any metal touching the motherboard can cause a short. i'd check whether or not the standoffs are in the right place.... all are under the screw holes and not anywhere else. doing so will require removing the motherboard.

also with the motherboard out see if the fan was installed properly (clip pins showing through the back of the motherboard)

I think your onto something there .... Didn't use all the washers maybe thats causing it. And yes I'm going to yank my PSU out and try on dads.

Also make sure you've plugged in the 4 pin ATX12V connector, as this will very often happen if it's accidentally left unplugged.

This type of problem is common wid p.c users and the main cause is overheating , you should extend the number of fan place one more fan in cpu....

Thanks but your computer does not overheat in 1/2 of a second so no its not over heating.

ding ding, that sounds like a probable culprit to me
Hmm I was sure I would find the problem there but I even removed ALL screws and it still did it.

Then I tried a different (also crap) power supply and still same problem

Got 3 more possible ideas;-
1. Faulty mobo that shorts itself (how likely is this?
2. CPU was shoddy and I got ripped off (damn Ebay)
3. There is something metal bellow the mobo shorting it

Anyone got any other ideas and any ideas how to test the CPU without having to dismantle 2 computers to take the CPU out?

Thanks Jon

1. it may be faulty. someone probably (worker or you) zapped it.
2. if it wasn't in the original package perhaps he oc'ed it to death. did the seller have a good reputation? ask him about the cpu history
3. you only have 6 yellow standoffs, right? and each of them are directly positioned under a screw hole on your motherboard? then the washer is sandwiched between the screw head and the motherboard? was it the right kind of screw? my antec 900 came with 3 different similar sized screw and i determined the ones that weren't used in the drive cages were the ones for the mobo.

other than that the only other thing i can think of is running the mobo out of the computer to see if the components work... and should have been done from the start:

Yea test the motherboard out of the case with your cpu, ram, video card. If it still does the same thing its probably a faulty motherboard or cpu.

Well I was fully de-staticed (made that word up but you can guess what that means)

The seller did have a good rating but I did not buy it my friend did but never used it. The original thermal paste was also on the CPU still (2 lines that come as standard) and appeared untouched so don't think it has been used but is a possibility by an idiot who didn't put their own thermal paste on then fried it.

I will try it out of the computer this evening sometime, wish I had a spare CPU to test with.

I don't have a video card yet, stopped buying for now until I get this sorted

Ebuyer have said we can send the computer to them and they will check all the parts free of charge and see if they can find a solution. Problem is postage will be a lot.

Will the computer turn on and fans stay on if there is no CPU in it?

did u plug int he started cabal i fink its the 12v cabal, i accidently unplug that b4 and it sounds like the same description u wrote. on for like 1 sec then off right?

1) Faulty PSU
2) Insufficient PSU
3) Forgot the standoffs
4) Blown capacitors
