Computer unable to start

Hey,

I was in a middle of a game (World of Warcraft) and my screen suddenly went black and my monitor reported no signal. So I went ahead and pressed the reset button on my PC... nothing happened. With this failing I went ahead and held down the power button and my PC turned off.

On attempting to turn the PC back on I found that it would not start (No POST or anything), the case fans and hard drives would power up though. I restarted a few more times and unplugged it and left it a while but still the same problem.

I took the side off my case and powered up the machine once more and found that the CPU fan was not spinning (!) so I immediately turned it off.

Originally I though it was a problem with the graphics card so I removed it and tried to boot again but still the same issue with the CPU fan not spinning (Additionally prior to removing the graphics card I would of expected the fan on that to power up to max and then automatically turn itself down to the normal speed - something it was doing before the PC broke - it failed to do this).

PC Specs:

- Abit IP35 Mobo
- Intel Quad Q6600
- 2GB GeIL DDR2 RAM
- Corsair 550w modular PSU
- Random selection of hard drives (3 in total)
- BFG OC2 nVidia 8800GT graphics card

Any suggestions?

Just to add, I have tried resetting the CMOS.

Thanks,

Tom

Yah most likely your cpu fan died and your computer shut down to prevent damage to the cpu from heat. More than likely its not your graphics card its your cpu overheating so get a new heatsinc and fan and thermal paste and apply it to your cpu and see what happens.

If everything powers up but not your CPU fan...time for a new one. Processors have a safety net I guess you could call it...if it reached a certain temp it will automatically shut down to prevent damage. I would assume this is what is happening to your computer. Processors can reach very high temps in a matter of seconds. If your CPU fan is plugged in and does not spin, do not try and power up until you get a new cooler, you could cause permanent damage.

I removed the CPU fan and CPU but still nothing... (Now the mobo has nothing installed in it apart from power).

I would at least expect the mobo to bleep to inform me that I have not got any components installed.

Anyone else think it might be a mobo problem now?

If I plug in the graphics card again (and only the graphics card - hoping I would get the BIOS coming up informing me of the missing CPU) then I still get the no signal error and no bleeps.

Edit: The only way to get my mobo to emit any sound is if I remove the power to my graphics card which produces a infinite bleep.

First off, beeping is annoying.

Down to business. It could be a board problem, but there is actually no way (that i know of) of checking if this is the case. It does sound as if something has gone wrong with the CPU fan though, so I would try replacing that and see what happens. They are fairly inexpensive anyway, so if it isn't that, all you've got is a spare.

If that doesn't work, then all I can suggest is to either contact the manufacturer (unless its a custom build or out of warranty), see if anyone here has any suggestions, pop it down to a local pc store, or send the motherboard to the manufacturer for diagnostics.

Maybe you have a problem with your PSU then?? That's the only thing that I can think of that would fix itself.
