What I was planning on doing was just replacing the existing motherboard and CPU for a faster motherboard and CPU.

I would like to know whether I could keep the existing OS and all the files safe on the hard drive instead of re-installing the OS again and formatting the drive.

Can I just unplug the hard drive until the BIOS is setup and then plug it in again expecting it to load up just like it used to?

some people say you can do a windows repair but from my experience it is always better to do a fresh install if you have things you dont want to lose on the hdd back them up to cdr
